June 20 | Majority of Icelanders favor cancelling defense agreement with US

Several |Icelandic news organizations report the results of a new poll conducted by Gallup and commissioned by Helgi Hjörvar, Member of Parliament for the Social Democrats.

The poll asked participants if they were for or against cancelling the defense agreement with the US. 33.2 per cent were "strongly in favor" of cancelling the agreement, 20.6 per cent "moderately in favor"; 9.4 per cent were "strongly against" cancelling the agreement and 15.4 per cent " moderately against". Overall, 53.8 per cent were in favor of cancelling the defense agreement and 24.8 per cent against with 21.3 per cent neither for or against. Replies were received from 802 of the 1.300 people polled.

Earlier this year, the US unilaterally announced it would withdraw the bulk of its forces from Iceland in a move which some have characterized as a breach of the US-Iceland defense agreement.

Among other things the US-Iceland defense agreement states that "the US shall always undertake to execute its obligations under this agreement to ensure the security of the Icelandic nation to the fullest possible extent, keeping in mind how few in numbers Icelanders are and the fact that they have through the course of the centuries not been used to bearing arms."

This is a predictable response to the earlier US action.

Had it not been for their strategic location I would have said - who cares about an iceberg floating in the middle of the sea?

Good! They aren't in anyone's way anymore (Soviets or Germans) so they don't need a defense pact with us.

Iceberg? The island is nearly as green as Ireland.

Iceland is strategically positioned for control of the North Atlantic. In WW2, the Germans wanted Iceland to shut down USA to USSR and Great Britain convoy routes.

During the Cold War, Soviet military doctrine in the event of conventional World War 3 was to take Iceland for the same purpose, denying convoys to Europe. Tom Clancy does a fascinating job of illustrating this in Red Storm Rising.

Jack Nicklaus loves to fish there! Always stopped there on the way home from the British Open.

I once interviewed the president of Iceland. Nice lady by the name of Vigdis. She told me everyone is listed in the phone book there by their first names. Interesting, ay?
I mean, yah?

Helgi HjÃrvar, Member of Parliament for the Social Democrats.

Hey, we got Social Democrats too!

These members of the United States House of Representatives also belong to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The DSA is a confederation of socialists formed in 1983 when a splinter group of the Socialist Party (Michael Harrington's Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, DSOC) merged with the SDS splinter New American Movement (NAM).

The DSA has many celebrity members, including feminist Gloria Steinem, actor Ed Asner, black activist Cornel West, and libertarian socialist Noam Chomsky. It is also the chief American member group of the Socialist International, which includes the British Labour Party and the French Parti Socialiste.

The main aim of DSA was to convert the Democratic Party into a social democratic organization.

For more information about the DSA, you can go to their web site at http://www.dsausa.org.

At one time, the following list could be located on the DSA web site.  Once this list was made public, The DSA removed the link.  These congress critters don't want you to know their true colors (red).
