Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is leaving open the possibility of backing Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein for re-election, despite an impassioned appeal from her GOP rival, former state Sen. Dick Mountjoy.
Schwarzenegger surprised his Republican backers shortly after the primary when he said he would have no problem endorsing a Democrat for office this year. "If I like someone, absolutely,'' he said at a June 8 campaign stop in Antioch.
While the governor didn't name any names, Steve Schmidt, his campaign manager, wasn't quite so circumspect.
"Like most Californians, (Schwarzenegger) thinks Dianne Feinstein is a great senator,'' Schmidt said.
While Schwarzenegger has made a blanket endorsement of the other Republicans on the statewide ticket, he has pointedly left the Senate seat out of the mix.
The governor "has not made an endorsement in the Senate race,'' Julie Soderlund, a spokeswoman for Schwarzenegger's campaign, said Friday. "We have nothing to announce at this time.''
The governor's reluctance to back Mountjoy has made a tough campaign even more of a longshot. The 74-year-old Monrovia (Los Angeles County) resident only jumped into the race after Republicans failed to recruit a better-known candidate and finds himself running far behind Feinstein in the polls and the quest for campaign cash.

That's Our Gubby!
That's another reason why I won't vote for him.
"GOP candidate seeks Schwarzenegger's backing But governor may prefer Feinstein over conservative"
Yeah, and there's no such things as a black racist. >sarcasm<

Now there's a name right out of a James Bond movie.
It's easy to be ashamed of California's Republican, so called, leaders. Feinstein is China's captive Senator and Arnold's people are sucking up the her and her controllers. Go figure.
I'm glad he can think for himself, and isn't lock-stepped to a party....but I guess that sort of thing isn't proper, obvious RINO.
Maybe it's a Rovian move on his part: support the blithering ineffectual completely insubstantial village idiot (which is saying a lot in SF) in return for a little Dem support. I can't fault him for that.
Hey Dick, How's that for a kick in the Schwartz?
Why wouldn't he endorse a Democrat...he and most of his staff are Democrats.
This is a vivid picture of the future, if conservatives don't exercise control over their own party.
Feinstein does have some streaks of sanity. Every now and then she's like a stopped clock twice a day. The same can't be said of that of the ultra-socialist Boxer.
Feinstein is the worst senator CA has ever had, excepting maybe Boxer. She is anit-gun, pro-abortion, socialist to the max and you think it is ok for a Rebublican governor to support her over the GOP candidate because it is great "not to be in lockstep?". The only people in CA who are not in lockstep over this bitch are the ones who won't vote for her EVER. Arnold is beyond being a RINO, he should just change parties and get it over with.
What's next?
Will Arnold be endorsing Jerry (Moonbeam) Brown over Chuck Poochigian for AG?
After all, Jerry Brown endorsed Arnold over Gray Davis/Bustamecha.
If both Arnold and McClintock win, I give it very low probablility that Arnold would back Tom to succeed him in 2010.
More likely, he'd team up with his buddy Villaraigosa instead.
No, read again....I said I think it is ok for a gov to be able to think for himself, and not be locked to a party...who he thinks is good or bad, isn't mentioned in my response.
Chalk another one up for the New Majority and Kiss the CA GOP conservative base good-bye on both cheeks.
Every time they win, another conservative bites the dust and there are folks here at FR that seem to revel in this and claim it a "success".
It's all about acquiring power, nothing more.
Okay, let me understand this.
Arnold is flirting with endorsing a Liberal Democrat, which is akin to Chafee's write in for G.H.W.B. in 2004.
Conservatives are to support the party no matter what because Republicans aren't Democrats.
Yet this "republican" won't back the other "Republican".
Double standard? The politicians can do whatever they want and we're to suck it up and vote for "caucus" sake when the Pols have no such loyalty?
Tancredo is being bashed for backing a Republican challenger in Utah against a Republican incumbent, but McCain can back a Republican (Liberal) challenger against a Republican (conservative) incumbent and the same folks don't say a word?
And some people wonder why fewer are buying the argument of "incrementalism" and "caucus votes" any longer. It's code for allowing the Liberals control unchallenged.
Feinstein is a great Senator?
Let's see, in my inbox I have a note from Feinstein saying she is adamantly opposed to a blanket amnesty.
However, she is now on record as voting FOR the biggest blanket amnesty in the history of this country.
She's a perfect example of Mark Twain's little joke about criminals and congressmen.
One vote for Mountjoy right here.
