A coalition calling itself "Bush Go Home" said Monday it hoped some 10,000 to 15,000 demonstrators will take to the streets of Vienna Wednesday to protest against the visit of U.S. President George W. Bush.
"The name George Bush, the name of the American president, has become a symbol for war crimes, for Abu Ghraib, for Guantanamo, for Jenin, said organizer Michael Proebsting, a member of the Austrian faction of the League for the Fifth International.
The coalition is made up of groups including the Communist Initiative, the Anti-Imperialist Coalition and representatives from Austria's Turkish, Syrian, Iraqi and Palestinian communities.
Proebsting said he hoped that between 10,000 and 15,000 people would participate in the march slated to begin late Wednesday afternoon, the day of the EU-U.S. summit hosted by Austria, which currently hosts the European Union's rotating presidency.
But with security expected to be very tight in Vienna's city center, organizers acknowledged they may not be able to get very close to the Hofburg Palace, the location of the summit.
During the visit, slated to begin late Tuesday, Austrian authorities are mobilizing some 3,000 police to secure the streets, said Interior Ministry spokesman Rudolf Gollia. Of those, some 1,000 will focus solely on the demonstrations, Gollia said.
"We're confident that we're well prepared," Gollia said.
This will literally be a walk in the park for them.
The antiwar movement is off the streets and making its last gasps in the halls of the U.S. Congress.
Hopefully GW drops in Sacher cafe. If he has to be there, why not get one of more pleasant experiences?
And happily so! The Austrians were very enthusiastic National Socialists.
10,000 would be around 1/8 of a percent, or .12.....%
The protestors are Austrian, wouldn't they more probably drink Austrian or German beer?
.....Austrian; wouldn't.....
I worked, in the U.S. for an Austrian Company for 10 years. They are still Nazi's, they screw Americans, and think the world owes them.
SO they'll get 100, report it to CNN and Presto! They have 10,000 demonstrators.
The Austrians are upset that we removed a National Socialist from power in Iraq. (And did they ever get around to changing the name of that stadium to honor Tookie Williams?)
I'm starting to wonder if some of these Europeans (some now, not all) have a job or a life! They seem to have an awful lot of time to spend on the streets to do these pointless demonstrations.
That's right! He needs to tell these Vienna sausages to get their cans out of the way ;-)
