Coulter's Crudeness
Boston Globe ^ | 6/19/06 | Cathy Young

Posted on 06/19/2006 8:25:28 AM PDT by pissant

SEVERAL years ago, left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall published a cartoon mocking the ``terror widows" -- the bereaved of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as Marianne Pearl, the widow of kidnapped and slain journalist Daniel Pearl -- as a bunch of greedy and shallow attention-seekers. The outrage was universal. A number of press outlets, including The New York Times website, pulled the cartoon. Subsequently, when the Times and The Washington Post stopped carrying Rall's work, conservatives called it a victory for decency.

Now, the right has its own Ted Rall in the infamous Ann Coulter. In her new book, ``Godless: The Church of Liberalism," Coulter takes a whack at the ``Jersey Girls," four Sept. 11 widows who have been highly critical of the Bush administration. She refers to them as ``self-obsessed women" who ``believe the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony," and then concludes with this zinger: ``These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief -arrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband's death so much."

A number of conservatives, including prominent Republican blogger and radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt, have denounced Coulter's statement. Unfortunately, many others have rallied to her defense. Radio and Fox News talk-show host Sean Hannity has mildly suggested that she may have gone too far, but has avoided condemning her outright and has given her plenty of airtime on his show.

Bill O'Reilly, the host of the Fox News show ``The O'Reilly Factor," has been harshly critical of Coulter's comments. Yet several of his conservative guests vigorously defended her. Republican strategist Karen Hanretty opined,

No, so long as you are factually observing the actions and idiotic pronouncements that came from the harpies.

Although if Coulter had used less inflammatory language her actual points would not have been so utterly obscured in the explosive reaction.

If Coulter used less inflammatory language then she wouldn't be Coulter, and nobody would pay any attention to her.

Coulter is exactly right about the Left, their tactics, and the fact that the latest liberal ploy is to climb on top of the nearest casket to wage political war.

It's what they do. The reason the swine are so "offended" is because she had the guts to say it.

Absolutely.

"If we say it enough, everyone will think it's true."

Classic liberal/msm tactics.

Rall and Coulter are not doing the same thing. It's not the same thing at all.

Exactly, but it's close enough so that Coulter-haters can blur the distinction in the public's mind. Besides, this woman writes for "Reason Magazine," the Libertarian flagship. Anyone who equates Libertarians with conservatives is either making a grievous error or is intentionally misleading. While they may agree on some issues they are not the same thing at all!

"I have yet to read anything "vile" about anything or anybody."

Oh, now. That won't do. The only real pornography in America, so far as liberals are concerned, is political speech.

The Globe is doing its usual crappy job of reportage and/or editorial diversity.

Believe me, like its New York Times owner, The Boston Globe always knows what's best for us.

If you don't believe that, just ask the paper's editorial board - they'll be happy to back up my assertion.

Putzes.

And Coulter's evidence that they are enjoying their husband's demise? I must have missed that part.

When someone says they are "right of center," they're liberals.

I think AC's position is more a commentary on the favored position that the Jersey chicks enjoy among the media literati. Other September 11 spouses and relatives who may hold a position in support of the administration, or particularly in support of the WOT, are not given the same attention by the media.

No. That's fly-over country.

If the widows signed a form agreeing not to sue the airlines in exchange for cash from the taxpayers pocket, I have think they sold their honor for a chunk of silver.

"So saying widows are greedy and oportunistic is OK so long as you keep the number small?"

I think I get it.

Widows have absolute moral authority.

"As someone who considers herself right of center, it makes me ashamed to be on the same side."

Good. Don't let the door hit ya'.

Oh, and can you take Lincoln Chafee, Arlen Specter, John McCain and a few others who like to claim to be "right of center" with you?

The only way many people who like to claim to be "right of center" can possibly meet that standard is if they have accepted the left's claim that "mainstream" is what just a few years ago was considered radical wacko left.

It's the equivalent of saying "the MSM is gleeful about alleged Marine atrocities" based on the fact that they talk, report and edit the news to appear that way. Can only base it on their words and deeds and we will never know what exactly the MSM editors actually "feel". Nonetheless, it is a valid statement.

The left has a boatload of streetfighters i.e. Al Franken, Michael Moore, Maureen Dowd, etc for whom no Democrat ever apologizes. Now that the Conservatives have one we are expected to tut-tut over her 'extreme' and 'mean-spirited' words. Me thinks they are just mad because they brought a knife to a gunfight.
