Coulter's Crudeness
Boston Globe ^ | 6/19/06 | Cathy Young

Posted on 06/19/2006 8:25:28 AM PDT by pissant

SEVERAL years ago, left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall published a cartoon mocking the ``terror widows" -- the bereaved of the Sept. 11 attacks as well as Marianne Pearl, the widow of kidnapped and slain journalist Daniel Pearl -- as a bunch of greedy and shallow attention-seekers. The outrage was universal. A number of press outlets, including The New York Times website, pulled the cartoon. Subsequently, when the Times and The Washington Post stopped carrying Rall's work, conservatives called it a victory for decency.

Now, the right has its own Ted Rall in the infamous Ann Coulter. In her new book, ``Godless: The Church of Liberalism," Coulter takes a whack at the ``Jersey Girls," four Sept. 11 widows who have been highly critical of the Bush administration. She refers to them as ``self-obsessed women" who ``believe the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony," and then concludes with this zinger: ``These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief -arrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband's death so much."

A number of conservatives, including prominent Republican blogger and radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt, have denounced Coulter's statement. Unfortunately, many others have rallied to her defense. Radio and Fox News talk-show host Sean Hannity has mildly suggested that she may have gone too far, but has avoided condemning her outright and has given her plenty of airtime on his show.

Bill O'Reilly, the host of the Fox News show ``The O'Reilly Factor," has been harshly critical of Coulter's comments. Yet several of his conservative guests vigorously defended her. Republican strategist Karen Hanretty opined,

While Ted Rall is a marginal figure on the left, Coulter is a star of right-wing punditry and a regular speaker at conferences of the Conservative Political Action Committee. One would think that her vile remarks about the Sept. 11 widows would have given conservatives a perfect opportunity to distance themselves from her venom. Apparently, they have no desire to do so. As someone who considers herself right of center, it makes me ashamed to be on the same side.

If this chick is "right of center" she must be in the David Gergen mold of the term.

I just saw her Tonight Show gig. She was terrific. When I read thing like this, I'll just hear her voice saying..."I WEAR THEIR CONTEMPT AS A BADGE OF HONOR!"

Amazing...the MSM/Left lies about everything.

____

One would think that her vile remarks about the Sept. 11 widows would have given conservatives a perfect opportunity to distance themselves from her venom...

_______

She's talking about the "Jersey Girls," not all Sept. 11 widows. And, in their case, as harsh as it sounds, she's right. Does that mean these women wouldn't trade their notoriety for their husbands' lives? Of course not.

However, these women would not have received any exposure without the deaths of their husbands (like Cindy Sheehan). They have embraced it like rock stars.

It is what it is.

I believe Rall painted with a broad brush and insulted hundreds of women. I also believe that Rall implied that these women were greedy and opportunistic individuals.

Coulter, on the other hand, is singling out 4 women. She is saying that these women are not only greedy, but also willing to be used as tools by the opportunistic Democrats who feel that political points can be made, with no counter-response possible by the Republicans, due to the "protected status" of the widows.

Rall and Coulter are not doing the same thing. It's not the same thing at all.

I guess that's what the Globe offers up for their "conservative" balance.

And then the MSM decided they were counter terrorism and homeland security experts while they were cutting commercials for the traitor Kerry.

The only thing they have in common is they are both women.

Lately it seems that Cathy Young has really lost her internal compass. Is she trying too hard to be accepted by her leftist peers? I had expected much more in the way of insight and rational thought from her, but have become increasingly disillusioned as the quality of her thinking seems to have become diminished.

Any comparison of Ted Rall (whose polemics are generally based on lies) and Ann Coulter (whose polemics are generally based on truthful observations) that finds them to be equivalent can not be taken seriously. Cathy has lost all sense of reason and proportionality.

Rall and Coulter are not doing the same thing. It's not the same thing at all.

So saying widows are greedy and oportunistic is OK so long as you keep the number small?

No controversy over the charge that Democrats are "Godless." I guess they agree.

I am nearly at the end of "Godless". I have yet to read anything "vile" about anything or anybody. She is exactly right about these 4 women--it's still should be okay to call a spade a spade.

You're right - and as often as liberals are corrected on this, they never seem to get it right. Maybe the lie works for them better than the truth? Ya think it's possible?

Very good points.

Although if Coulter had used less inflammatory language her actual points would not have been so utterly obscured in the explosive reaction.
