NEW YORK U.S. officials received intelligence that Al Qaeda operatives had been 45 days away from releasing a deadly gas into the city's subways when the plan was called off by Usama bin Laden's deputy in 2003, according to a book excerpt released Sunday on Time magazine's Web site.
According to the investigative report by Ron Suskind, an informant close to Al Qaeda leaders told U.S. officials that Ayman al-Zawahiri had canceled the plan in January 2003, despite the likelihood that the strike would have killed as many people as the Sept. 11 attacks.
The informant said the operatives had planned to use a small, easily concealed device to release hydrogen cyanide into multiple subway cars. U.S. officials had already discovered plans for the device on the hard drive of a computer of a Bahraini jihadist arrested in February 2003, and they had been able to construct a working model from the plans.
The easy-to-make device, called "the mubtakkar," meaning "invention" in Arabic or "initiative" in Farsi, represented a breakthrough in weapons technology that "was the equivalent of splitting the atom," Suskind writes in his book. All previous attempts to use the deadly gas, similar to that used in Holocaust-era gas chambers, in mass attacks had failed.

I seem to remember the liberals making fun of the terrorism danger level and how it was moved quite a bit during this time.
If those idiots only knew then....but then again, they have no shame anyway....
Because had they proceeded, the entire Middle East save Israel would have been reduced to charred rubble.
yep...maybe not all of it, but certainly we would be knocking out known AQ cell locations with nukes, not bombs...
The answer to a WMD is a nuke, every single time.
Yeah, the Libs probably knew, but didn't care.
They saw an election coming up that they 'needed' to win at any cost.
So even if the Libs knew, they'd ignore it.
yep
no shame the bastids
They're the Aphids of the political world.
Wonder if they would have tried for 03/11/03? When did the train bombing in Spain occur? 03/11/04?
Al Qaeda have decide to wait for a democrat administration. If they had gassed the subways, western Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan would now be a nuclear wasteland.
yeah...
dates with 11 in it have some sort of signifigance with AQ anyway.
Most likely....
although I don't want to rule out us going into Iraq a bit quicker than we did if it had occured.
yeah...
"What has been concluded for the most part is this: Al Qaeda's thinking is that a second-wave attack should be more destructive and more disruptive than 9-11," Suskind told the magazine in an interview".
Is this really the answer to why it was called off?
It would have terrorized millions who use mass transit throughout all major cities for the long haul.
The libs were just praying for some kind of disaster before the 2004 election so that they could blame it on Bush.
Aw shucks.
further down in the story, President Bush himself is reported to have wondered just why they called it off.
My guess is that our buildup in Iraq had AQ worried (this all occured at the same time that we were screwing around with the UN to get them to go into Iraq with us). I seem to remember that our danger alert level went right up around the time that Colin Powell went into the UN with his briefing, and the libs trashed President Bush and Homeland Security for playing games.....
Maybe they figured (and probably correctly) that we'd respond with a nuke in the case of a gas attack.
maybe not all of them, but it's sad to say that there is a definitive contingent of liberals who think exactly that way.
They were using this:
I can't see it for some reason....
no I think it was actually something else....
they picked 9/11 (and 3/11 and then the attack in Britain) because the dates meant something to them....
