Dellums Wins Oakland, Calif., Mayor Race

Oakland, Calif. -- After nearly two weeks of ballot counting, former Rep. Ron Dellums emerged as the winner of the Oakland mayor's race Saturday when his chief rival said he would not challenge the election results.

City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente called Dellums at home to concede, said Mike Healy, a spokesman for Dellums' campaign.

"Ignacio was very gracious," Healy said. "He said he wants to work with Ron for a better Oakland, and that it was a great campaign."

De La Fuente campaign officials would not confirm that he made the concession call, but they scheduled a news conference at his Oakland home at 3:30 p.m.

The final ballot count released late Friday showed Dellums winning the simple majority needed to avoid a November runoff against De La Fuente.

Dellums secured 50.2 percent of the vote, while De La Fuente was in second place with 33.0 percent, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.

City Councilwoman Nancy Nadel was a distant third with 13.1 percent. The three remaining candidates finished with less than 4 percent combined.

The county's return to paper ballots and a shortage of optical scanners to process them slowed the final count. Alameda County returned to low-tech voting

Oakland will soon be sister city of Pyongyang and Havana.

NK is working on a longe range missile. Maybe they'll go after the Bay area instead of L.A. or Seattle.

If aiding and abetting the enemy in a time of war is treason then Ron Dellums should be facing charges for his actions prior to Reagan's Grenada offensive.

IIRC, he threw a 'top aide' overboard to save his own putrid ass from getting busted. And to think this man was soooo close to being Chair of the Armed Forces Committee!

No, I don't have the links.

Look what they had to choose from. "Red" Dellums or De La Fuente, who claims, but can't prove that he's not an illegal alien, and has a crime-family the Memphis Fords could take lessons from.

He was the Cynthia Mckinney of the 1980's. I thought he was dead or in jail by now.

De La Fuente concedes, won't challenge Oakland mayoral results

Christopher Heredia and Janine DeFao, Chronicle Staff Writers

Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente conceded the mayor's election to former U.S. Rep. Ron Dellums today, offering congratulations and support to the city's new mayor.

Surrounded by family members at his house in Oakland's Fruitvale district, De La Fuente gave a brief statement to the press.

"This morning I called Ron Dellums to congratulate him and pledged to work very hard on the issues that got me in the mayor's race,'' he said.

De La Fuente's announcement came a day after the Alameda County Registrar of Voters unofficial final tally in the mayor's race showed Dellums surpassed the simple majority needed to avoid a runoff by 155 votes.

Dellums received 41,992 votes or 50.18 percent of the votes cast, compared to De La Fuente's 27,607 or 32.99 percent. . . .

The voters in Oakland (just like everywhere else) have and will get the government they deserve.

Maybe they are trying to out-Berkeley Berkeley.

"Give me back my delegation!" Didn't he give that speech to set aside the rules already established at the convention?

I don't remember, but he now is responsible for the Oakland delegation... God help them all!

Why would NK go after an ally?

Here's some scary insight into the vipers' nest of anti-Americanism that Ron "Red" Dellums will now be presiding over. He and Rep. Barbara Lee go back a long way and he'll be getting lots of help from the Communists in Berkeley, San Francisco and elsewhere.

Dellums

Thanks for linking this important information

Yet, on his retirement, the Clinton Administration’s Secretary of Defense, William S. Cohen, bestowed on Ron Dellums the highest civilian honor the Pentagon can award "for service to his country."

Excuse me while I hurl.

I think he turned the tide to give the nomination to McGovern, whose quota ideas took over the Democrats and then the country.

With two weeks of ballot counting both sides must have been busy stuffing the boxes. Evidently Dellums had more paper than the other guy.

And never forget that William S. Cohen was a Maine "Republican" like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Scary stuff.
