This post seems to imply that sectarianism and divisions are uniquely Islamic, and that these sects think the others are worthy of death.

I looked up the number of Christian denominations once and, if I remember rightly, the number was some 60,000. And there is a substantial number of those that believe that unless the others repent, they are bound for hell.

The difference seems to be that very few of the Christian denominations believe it is their call to send those they disagree with to hell.

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [6:61:577] Narrated 'Ali:
I heard the Prophet saying, "In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. They will give good talks, but they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out of its game, their faith will not exceed their throats. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection."

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [9:84:64] Narrated 'Ali:
Whenever I tell you a narration from Allah's Apostle, by Allah, I would rather fall down from the sky than ascribe a false statement to him, but if I tell you something between me and you (not a Hadith) then it was indeed a trick (i.e., I may say things just to cheat my enemy). No doubt I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "During the last days there will appear some young foolish people who will say the best words but their faith will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have no faith) and will go out from (leave) their religion as an arrow goes out of the game. HADITH Sunan Abu Dawud [14:2526] Narrated Anas ibn Malik:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, "There is no god but Allah" and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). The tyranny of any tyrant and the justice of any just (ruler) will not invalidate it. One must have faith in Divine decree.

WOMEN (and girls) IN ISLAM:
KORAN [2.223] Your wives are a tilth for you, so go into your tilth when you like, and do good beforehand for yourselves, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers.

KORAN [4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [7:62:67] Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "A matron should not be given in marriage except after consulting her; and a virgin should not be given in marriage except after her permission." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! How can we know her permission?" He said, "Her silence (indicates her permission)."

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [5:58:234] Narrated Aisha:
The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [7:62:64] Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

THE JOOOOOOZ IN ISLAM:

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:52:177] Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:56:791] Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The Jews will fight with you, and you will be given victory over them so that a stone will say, 'O Muslim! There is a Jew behind me; kill him!' "

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6981] Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
You will fight against the Jews and you will kill them until even a stone would say: Come here, Muslim, there is a Jew (hiding himself behind me); kill him.

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6982] Ubaidullah has reported this hadith with this chain of transmitters (and the Words are):
"There is a Jew behind me."

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6983] Abdullah b. 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
You and the Jews would fight against one another until a stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; come and kill him.

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6984] Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
The Jews will fight against you and you will gain victory over them until the stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; kill him.

We have, after all, the life and deeds of the muderous, demonic prophet himself if we are unclear on anything in the various writings.

I'd suggest Buddhism as a first step. Maybe Sikh as a baby step.

We can certainly use people trying to reform Islam from within, and possibly to figure out some way of reconciling it to modern ideas of freedom.

There is, however, a major difference between Christianity and Judaism on the one side and Islam on the other. There have certainly been wicked and violent Christians and wicked and violent Jews. But Islam was founded by a "prophet" who himself was violent, took slaves, broke his sworn oath, had sexual relations with a 9-year-old child, and in general exhibited all sorts of atrocious behavior.

Jesus didn't go around cutting off people's heads, enslaving them, or raping them. Muhammed did. I find that difficult to get around. For the most part, the best Muslims seem to be those who don't take their religion too seriously.

If this moslem wants to take a lesson he might observe the spread of the Christian gospel. A few conquistadors notwithstanding, it has been spread without the sword, which is the only way islam has ever prevailed over others.

A major problem with Islam is that there are as many different versions of Islam as there are Islamic pundits and there are legions of them.

Haven't read the whole thing yet, for context; but why does the author see this a "major problem with Islam"? As an anti-Mullah, pro-Democracy advocate you'd think he'd have just the opposite view.

Recognition of the (genuine) diversity of Islam can only help those who are oppressed by and oppose it's employment as a tool for authoritarian or totalitarian rule. A major thrust of Islamist, Jihadist rhetoric is to present Islam as monolithic. Their opponents should take the opposite tack. (Unfortunately many anti-Islamists here on FReerepublic and elsewhere essentially endorse the Islamist claim that theirs is the true and only Islam.)
