Dan Rather might work for the
high-definition channel HDNet.
The 74-year-old man with the Mets cap pulled far down on his forehead slid into a booth at a diner on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and ordered a glass of milk without so much as turning a head so quietly, in fact, that it was hard to believe it was Dan Rather.
In place of the swagger that had served him so well throughout his 44-year career at CBS News was an obvious sadness that his tenure at the network was ticking down to an inglorious end. Mr. Rather complained that since stepping down as anchor of the " CBS Evening News" last year, in the aftermath of a reporting scandal, he had been ill used as a correspondent on "60 Minutes" and had been given virtually nothing at all to do for the previous six weeks.
Among the places he had sought solace, he said on a recent afternoon, was in "Good Night, and Good Luck," George Clooney's homage to Edward R. Murrow and the CBS News of old, a film that Mr. Rather said he had seen five times in theaters, most recently alone.
Mr. Rather's contract with CBS, and "60 Minutes," is not scheduled to expire until late November. But he said yesterday that he and the network were close to an agreement that would end his tenure early, and that he was seriously mulling a new venture that, at least initially, relatively few viewers would be able to see: he would develop and be the host of a weekly interview program on a high-definition television channel known as HDNet.
The offer, he said, had come directly from Mark Cuban, the unbridled owner of the NBA's

Maybe they could offer him a job cleaning Katie Couric's office (& bathroom) at minimum wage. Then he could still claim he worked for CBS.
To be replaced by Perky Katie. That has to be the unkindliest cut of all...
I read the thread entries before the article and didn't understand the "Go, Heat" references, but now I do. My respect for Mark Cuban took a 50% hit.
And Neoliberalnot, you are totally correct. Rather tried and fought for a legacy of bringing down a sitting President; he failed and hence is A Failure. His criminal acts should put him behind bars but at least his legacy is "Fake, but Accurate" which I will pay to have put on his grave stone.
If you had an ounce of dignity and class, Dan, you would slink away, retire, and attempt to enjoy the rest of your years. But you won't, because you're a liberal and you have zero class and zero dignity and crave to be in the limelight, full of self-importance.
Dan Dan Dan....Kenneth gave you the wrong frequency
... or sailing with Cronkite. :)
Bill Rorich: This is a brutal layoff. And all because they couldn't program Wednesday nights.
Paul Moore: You can make it less brutal by knocking a million or so off your salary... Bad joke, I'm sorry.
Thanks. Bumping post #47.
If you set out to kill the King, you better make sure he's dead!
I could almost...feel sorry for him; and in a way do. . .inasmuch as he still does not 'get it' and never will.
(Of course, for Libs; his crime was not 'manufacturing' News; they do that every day. . .it was his determined clumsiness when mishandling the truth which made CBS look bad. . ..)
. ..and that IS a crime one pays for. . .
Ha! This was a bit south of you, after I left the North Country. Dan often fished the Beaver Kill around the fly fishing mecca, Roscoe, NY (in Sullivan County). I had a place in neighboring Delaware County.
about him... clung the putrid stench of a recent, self-fouling.
As he removed his cap he revealed what appeared to be a protective covering of aluminum foil on his head.
At that point he asked in a whisper, "What's the frequency, Kenneth?"
I replied, "What are you talking about and why are you calling me Kenneth?"
He screamed, "Fake, but accurate! Fake, but accurate!"
He then stood up, did two pirouettes and dove under the table screaming, "Incoming! Incoming! I hear the whistles of two 500 pound laser-guided Freeper truth bombs coming!"
As he was being led away by the "men in white coats" he glanced over his shoulder and said, "Courage... Courage."
HA! Prolly only one or two clicks away from the real truth.
Watching a fake movie by a fake actor, five times, the last time alone - that sums up the hilarious end of Dan Ted Baxter Rather.
LOL! That said. . .it may not; might be a more glorious - that is not glorius - end than even Dan can manage at this point. . .
Perhaps supermarket openings are in his future...
When does perkie katie start? I looked for her last night but didn't find her.
Nuts and Gas would be a much more applicable name.
Toffler said that as communications technologies improve, people will trust the mass media far less; the rise of the public Internet since the middle 1990's (especially since Windows 95 incorporated Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) support for Internet access when Windows 95 was introduced in 1995) resulted in a lot of people exchanging ideas and information far faster than what the MSM could do and without the bias of the MSM editors. Is it small wonder why your posting at nearly midnight EDT on 8 September 2004 literally changed the world?
