Citizens group confronts sheriff on immigrants

'Copwatch' calls for sheriff to release immigrants from jail Friday, June 16, 2006 Members of a citizens group known as Copwatch protested outside Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office Friday morning. They held signs asking Arpaio to release illegal immigrants that his deputies and volunteer posse members have arrested. The arrests came under a state law making it illegal to conspire to smuggle humans into Arizona, or to conspire to be smuggled. Arpaio came down from his 19th floor office in the Wells Fargo Building to let the members of Copwatch present their complaints in person. They told Arpaio that he and County Attorney Andrew Thomas are misintepreting the law, which they claim was intended to apply only to coyotes, or human smugglers. Arpaio responded that with over two dozen immigrants already having pleaded guilty, the justice system has apparently agreed that the law is constitutional.

but I like his idea of rounding up illegals.

There was a time on FreeRepublic when Sheriff Joe's propaganda wouldn't have made it to first base...This is like the Twilight Zone!

I read good and bad about Sheriff Arpaio. I went to the superior court site and looked at some of the cases. Of the 15 random cases that I looked at from different years, all were dismissed with prejudice or dismissed period except for one, and whomever was suing him was awarded 2000 dollars. I know what happened with the restraint chairs and I've read the comments about Saban, I want to read about this when it comes to court. I know one of the reporters who has written extensively about his office and this reporter is a stand up guy. I think that some of his ideas are good and the bad press doesn't seem to bother him, but I don't know him personally. I tried to read as much as I can when these incidences are reported.

You sound like a liberal

Sheriff Joe is a liberal. He supported Janet Napolitano, the Democrat candidate for the Governor of Arizona.
The RP in Arizona opposes him.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio
  Joseph M. Arpaio, Sheriff BIOGRAPHY
Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Maricopa County, Arizona
Phoenix, Arizona USA
(602) 876-1801

You probably know him as "America's Toughest Sheriff", a name given to him by the media years ago. It's a name he certainly has earned as the head of the nation's fourth largest Sheriff's Office. But even before he became Sheriff in 1993, Joe Arpaio was one tough law man.

After serving in the Army for three years from 1950 to 1953, Arpaio went on to build a federal law enforcement career and a reputation for fighting drug trafficking around the world.

From the United States to Mexico to Turkey to the Middle East to Central and South America, Arpaio was an expert in undercover work establishing a stellar record of infiltrating drug organizations and arresting drug offenders.

His expertise led him to management positions with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the United States and around the world. He concluded his remarkable career as head of the DEA for Arizona.

In 1992, building on his expertise as a former police officer in Washington D.C. and Las Vegas, and as a top federal law enforcement official, Arpaio successfully campaigned to become the Sheriff of Maricopa County.

He won the election in 1992. Four years later, in 1996, after his policies had earned him unprecedented praise and an 85% public approval rating, no one even ran against him when he sought a second term as Sheriff.

After 42 years of law enforcement experience, Arpaio's strength is in his ability to know what the public wants. "As Sheriff, I serve the public. The public is my boss", are statements often made by Sheriff Arpaio.

And in serving the public, Arpaio has done many unique things as Sheriff.

On August 3, 1993, he started the nation's largest Tent City for convicted inmates. Over 2000 convicted men and women serve their sentences in a canvas incarceration compound. It is a remarkable success story and has garnered the attention of government officials and media worldwide.

The same is true for his chain gangs which work six days a week contributing thousands of dollars of free labor to the community. The male chain gang and the world's first ever female chain gang clean streets, paint over graffiti, and bury the indigent in the county cemetery.

Equally impressive are the Sheriff's get tough policies. Arpaio doesn't believe in coddling criminals, frequently saying that jails should not be country clubs. He banned smoking, coffee, pornographic magazines, movies and unrestricted television in all jails. He has the cheapest meals in the country too. The average inmate meal costs under 20 cents.

Arpaio also has launched innovative rehabilitation programs like "Hard Knocks High ", the only accredited high school in an American jail. His ALPHA program teaches inmates to turn away from drugs. It is one of his proudest accomplishments. A high percentage of ALPHA graduates leave his jail clean and sober and rarely, if ever, return to incarceration.

As for his deputies, Arpaio has increased salaries, encouraged education by providing incentive pay, improved equipment and the fleet, and has elevated this office to a full-service, state-of-the-art world renowned law enforcement agency.

Also under Arpaio, the posse has grown to 3200 members, the nation's largest volunteer posse. These men and women, always are a great help to deputies, help in search and rescue and other traditional police work as well as in special operations like round-ups of deadbeat parents, fighting prostitution in the valley's so-called red light district, and patrolling malls and shops during holidays. The posse's contribution is invaluable and essentially free to taxpayers.

Arpaio and his wife, Ava, have been married 47 years. They have two children and three grandchildren who also reside in the Phoenix area.

Arpaio says his plans include several more years as the head of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Do you believe ALL press releases then? I guess we should be calling him St. Joe now.

His "career" in the DEA was not exactly as written here. Something about claiming to have had a hand in the "French Connection/Serpico" case, which turned out to be patently false. Guess he went to the Al Gore School of Publicity.

Casually acquainted? How sad for you.

"Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for head of Homeland Security."

Great idea. But first Bush will actually have toss his current agenda and then make securing our borders a priority. If that were going to happen, it would have. On 9/12/01.

Sheriff Arpaio has got to be the greatest LEO in the country.

If every Sheriff ans chief ran their store like he does, this would be a better/safer country.

I thin the answer to your question lies in Irish's first two posts:

1. "Actually, my son was a member of this group a few years ago ..."

2. "Sheriff Joke is an ass."

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

OK. I found Arpaio.com, which is an anti-Arpaio website, but it looks like it hasn't been updated since 2005.

I found Mothers Against Arpaio, which appears to be a bunch of moms upset that Junior is a dirtbag and looking to displace their anger about that on somebody else -- usual ACLU type whining.

And I saw stuff indicating that Saban was a good cop, that Arpaio takes revenge on people, and that the Republican Party in AZ (which, I note, has produced a bunch of pro-amnesty weenies like McCain, Flake and Kolbe) is supporting challengers.

There doesn't appear to be any neutral source of information. There are websites that say he is Christ and he is Antichrist, and I'm reasonably sure that neither is the case. If you have a good case against this man, remember that as many times as YOU have seen this information, WE have not, so as frustrating as it is, you may need to start over.

Or someone needs to make a website that contains the backstory, but without the overpressure.

d.o.l.

So criminals have their own advocacy group now?

My friend, it would appear that you're not quite awake. Perhaps you need to drink a strong cup of coffee.

Once again, someone who doesn't live in this state is raving about Sheriff Joke. **rolls eyes**

Central Scrutiniser and Mugs99 don't have a son who USED to be in Copwatch, yet they can't stand Arpaio either. So what trite saying are you going to use to brush aside their criticism of the man?

All you know of the Jokester is what you've read in the MSM. Maybe you should try educating yourself before spouting off.

Kinda like the saying - "Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving in words evidence of the fact."

Every time someone starts praising The Joke to the high heavens, I try to educate them on the reality of living here with this guy. Invariably, I get attacked.

Many Freepers think this guy rides a white horse and is going to save us all. Newsflash - he only rides the white horse when the CAMERAS are around.

Now I'm being accused of being a liberal and my son is being denigrated by a total idiot who lives on the other side of the country.

Maybe Freepers, who are supposed to be so freakin' smart, would not fall hook, line, and sinker for the press releases this guy's press office (YES, HE HAS HIS OWN PRESS OFFICE!) puts out.

Everything I've said about this guy is true, and has been backed up by other posters who actually LIVE IN ARIZONA. If you want to keep your blinders on, fine. I will continue to post the truth about him when I come across a thread extolling his virtues, but if Joe's cheerleaders are too lazy to do their homework, it's not my problem.

Go to the forums on Apaio.com. Those are pretty current, and that's where most of the news is.
