The Canadian Tourism Commission wants to attract same-sex couples to Canada.

The agency has launched an advertising blitz in the United States to woo gay couples to tie the knot in Canada.

I encourage Americans to write as well. You just know American gay couples will use this to get their unions acknowledged by American courts.

That is a really good example. It seems to me that the US has been highly aggressive in believing and chasing the possibility of additional security risks. Full congratulations to Canada for breaking the home grown terrorism ring. But, did I misread the media coverage that seemed disbelieving that this could actually happen in Canada? The disbelief is, in my opinion, part of the vulnerable soft underbelly of Canadian character, or what you might also call the boy scout factor. I would understand if a group of liberals were to attack me for saying that. But, surely, it is not unreasonable to expect Canadian conservatives should be just as concerned that the issue of this security scare came as such a grand surprise.

I think the Mexican border is a more pressing political issue. I think the proposal put forward by the President is balanced and workable. But, obviously I appear to be in a minority position on that issue. I think ports represent an even larger threat than borders. And, I think militant Islamic communities are the greatest source of concern. I am not certain but I suspect there is a larger Islamic community in Canada than Mexico.

I think the stories on gay mounties, gay marriages and recruitment of gay tourists is part of a never ending media stream that paints a very soft image of Canada. I think conservatives need to stand up and say stop with all the nonsense.

Given I get all of the Buffalo TV stations & follow the rest of the Niagara Frontier media pretty closely (e.g. we get Rush via WBEN-am out of Buffalo which alone makes for several local newscasts listened to), I can assure you the immediate public reaction to the busting of the 'Lackawanna Six' in that part of the States was virtually identical to that occasioned by own recent terror cell arrests.

One of the things - among many - which likely skews your perceptions as to Canada is that, with under 1/10 of America's overall population, local matters/reactions become national ones much more easily & frequently up here.

That seems reasonable. Yet, Lackawanna, for many Americans, must be seen as a continuation of the change flowing out of 9/11. A change that has never stopped moving forward. Compare this to Canada that has an incredibly high profile home grown terrorist movement uncovered. Yet, within a few weeks we are back dealing with the media stream on gay mounties, marriage and tourists.
One day last week the home grown terrorist story in Canada was the number one story in the world. Ten days later and the story appears to be gone replaced by the same old fluffy nonsense. Conservatives should not be happy with this turn of events.

Perhaps I may owe fanfan an apology. I read the last sentence "You might want to take the beam from your eye" as implying I was excited (beaming) having seen the list. If, as I suspect, he meant that I had been blinded by "the log in my eye" than I am clearly mistaken and I apologize.

"beam" is the traditional biblical phrasing, meaning very large timber element, in contrast to "splinter" or "sliver"

fanfan was pointing out that many a place in the US is known for pro-homosexual environments and public activities. another case in point would be "gay-pride" days (weekends and even weeks in some cases) held in almost every major city in the US.

to castigate Canada's recent pro-homosexual tourism pitch is, given the vastly greater amount of the same crap found in the US, bald-faced hypocrisy.
