Al-Qaeda 'facing destruction'
SCOTSMAN ^ | 6/16/06 | GETHIN CHAMBERLAIN

Posted on 06/15/2006 9:11:39 PM PDT by Enchante

HUNDREDS of insurgents have been captured or killed as a result of information gleaned from the hunting down of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, it was claimed yesterday.

Even as the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq reached 2,500, the military was trumpeting the success of its pursuit of al-Qaeda, revealing 452 raids carried out since Zarqawi's killing on 7 June had resulted in the deaths of 104 insurgents, the capture of 759 "anti-Iraqi elements" and the discovery of 28 arms caches.

US and Iraqi officials said large numbers of documents had been seized during the hunt for Zarqawi, giving key information about the militant group's net-work and the whereabouts of its leaders.

Mouwafak al-Rubaie, Iraq's national security adviser, called it "the beginning of the end of al-Qaeda in Iraq". He said: "Now we have the upper hand. We feel that we know their locations, the names of their leaders, their whereabouts, their movements, through the documents we found during the last few days."

The documents seized included one from a computer found in an al-Qaeda hideout used by Zarqawi, apparently setting out al-Qaeda's future tactics and acknowledging it was losing not only the military battle but also the propaganda war. One of its suggestions for redressing the balance was to encourage hostility between the US and Iran. The document also said Zarqawi planned to try to destroy the relationship between the US and its Shiite allies in Iraq.

"I don't have a need for one that I can see."

Thumb drives are typically used for moving data from one PC to another. For example, if you have photos you want to bring with you to a family party, or whatever. They'll work on any PC so, should the host have a PC you can use the drive to do a photo display using his computer.

We need to pay a lot of attention to his plan to raise tensions between the US and Iran. I've heard it before and it is VERY interesting.

He might have figured the flash drive was more sensitive an instrument than his body.

He probably figured that either it would be destroyed with him, as you stated, or that if he was on the run or in a shootout, he would have a few seconds to destroy the thing.

I don't think he'd anticipated being bombed and only having the breath knocked out of him, to put it lightly. =P

In this case, we executed it exactly right. The bomb did its job in killing him (in a long, painful death) AND left behind enough evidence to round up 800+ terrorists (in only a week!).

Good work, boys!

I don't have a need for one that I can see.

Think "backup". Think "fire." I haven't practiced what I'm preaching here, but you should have scans of all your important documents (insurance, mortgage papers, birth & marriage certificates) on it. Family photos too. In an evacuation situation, pull it out & throw it in the Go bag.

I think I'll make that MY next project. I've been waiting till I get A Round Tuit.

I get the distinct impression some bio or chemical are about to be un-sanded real soon.

Ooooh, I hadn't thought of that. That would leave a mark.

"I note that the article ends with the clear implication that Zarqawi was playing the U.S. like a puppet with respect to the Iranian nuclear situation."

It concerns me because A: he probably hoped it would drive a wedge between coalition forces and Iraq's majority Shi'ite population and B: he must have already gotten assurances that Russia, France and China would block any US action in the UN.

It would have blown up in his face eventually (if a couple of 500 pound bombs hadn't blown up in his face first) but for a short while, if he succeeded, it'd have seriously messed up the progress of the Iraqi government and caused BIG problems for President Bush and Tony Blair.

LOL! I'd say it was good old fashioned detective work that finally did him in. Also a really stupid "religious advisor" who must have thought we weren't onto him. Not to mention Zarq himself being idiot enough to think he could use any Iraqi to murder other Iraqis with impugnity.

"Soliciting comments ping."
AQ world wide is a propaganda machine in essence. We are damaging their credibility. Hopefully future goons shall realize it is not worth getting killed over. To many of them only sign up because they are feed a bunch of glories staged videos with no ramifications attached. Once in A or I they find out all they can do is hide, and occasionally blow up a Humvee or group of innocent civilians. And of course once confronted with the fact they are supposed to drive suicide cars most of them realize they got into something they no longer want to participate in.
So there is no way they can win anything, as long as the western world continues to hunt them down and close down their networks.
