50 BEST MAGAZINES (as per the Chicago Tribune)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 6/15/06

Posted on 06/15/2006 1:50:09 PM PDT by Borges

We drew from all quarters of the periodicals universe in compiling this year's selections. And what can we say about the choices? They're eclectic, accessible and they reflect the tastes of folks who spend a lot of their time immersed in the world of words and images. But magazines are changing a bunch. In the last 12 months, we saw the curtains drawn on Cargo and Organic Style, which made our cut in 2005. Yet some, like gracefully aging performers, remain on the stage: The Atlantic and Harper's. We still like them, as our list shows. But our selections are meant to be a conversation starter, so look them over, then tell us which magazines would be on your list.

I agree with them on the Economist being #1 (I'd get it but it is soooooo expensive, and you never get a break on the cost), Esquire, however is horrid, at least it was the last time I looked. Proud to say the three mags we get are on this list, Wired, Gourmet and the New Yorker (an annual gift from my kind but liberal boss!).

What? No Cycle World?

I thought that RoadRacerX would make the cut. LOL! That mag stays in the john for two months between issues.

The only non-liberal one is the libertarian Reason at #37, and of course they included Time/Newsweek tied at whatever underserved spot they are in. That almost invalidates the entire thing, imho.

But you can send in your own lists if anyone cares to, check the link.

The Nation; bleeding red ink for so long its editors have all passed over, yet, like an enigmatic stigmata, it continues to smear the landscape, year after year.

Amazing that I don't read a single one of the 50 magazines on the list. Where is Maxim, it has one of the highest circulations of all magazines.

I've read the Economist over the past year and won't be renewing. It is hypercritical of everything American. It is negative. It is often tone deaf to American politics. I can get that on any mainstream media channel or Time, for that matter. Business Week and Business 2.0 are two of my favorites.

Best,
ampu

PS - It's GREAT to have a friend of the US in Victoria! And so nice to know.

Cook's Illustrated.

Worst ever. I was apalled. These people are astonishingly pretentious, and the seem to HATE FOOD. The whole magazine was designed around selling their advertiser's products -- obviously so, but not candidly so. (Their comparison of rotissseries concluded that they are are generally worthless and silly, you need a "V-rack" instead.) The whole magazine was insulting. Recipe write-ups, too. Rosemary and Garlic Roasted Chicken, by a woman who thinks rosemary is insipid and garlic is rank. She experimented with several ways to cook it, and decided that the best way was with a V-rack.

Dwell??? Number 2?? Dwell???

I've seen the mag and the tv show. For some reason I find Dwell and the folks it covers insufferable. I look at those people and all I see are smug liberals. They could all be rabid Republicans, I have no idea, but boy, I can't stand 'em. It's like Debbie Travis. Don't know why, but I hate that woman.

As far as girly stuff, I like Domino, Cottage Living, and the old standby Traditional Home. Like Cook's Illustrated, but can't justify the subscription anymore. Same for American Bungalow.

What's number 2? No, don't answer.

If you like American Cottage I cannot understand why you would even open Dwell which is Modern in the extreme. Give up. Resistance is futile.
