WASHINGTON -- The world's largest protected marine area is being created around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
The archipelago is 1,400 miles long and 100 miles wide.
It's home to rare marine mammals, fishes and birds.
On Thursday, President George W. Bush is to announce his decision to create the nation's newest national monument. It covers the vast chain of largely uninhabited islands, atolls, coral reef colonies and seamounts.
Conrad Lautenbacher, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said the new protected area in Hawaiian waters would dwarf all others.
Lautenbacher calls it "the single-largest act of ocean conservation in history."
The region hosts more than 7,000 species, at least a quarter of them found nowhere else.

Probably, as the other world heritage sites are. Eventually we'll have to ask the UN for the oxygen we breath.

Now that he has appeased the left at sea, maybe he can undo all the restrictions created by Clinton's No Roads Initiative which treats the National Forests like National Wilderness Parks.

Might this be a preemptive step to cut off secession?

Marine sanctuaries wind up begin double edged swords. The one in the Keys protects small areas where fishermen used to go while putting "more" pressure on other areas. Basically in the Keys it's diver "good" fisherman "bad".

Sanctuary for the Marines? That won't go over well with us who were in the Navy.
To: rodguy911
It's all the same to the left, regardless of land or sea. Sightseers, good. Someone making a living, bad.

Eventually, it is supposed to benefit fishermen, too, as populations flow out around the edges. Do you think that will happen.
Next, the Stanford alumni mag said last month that the Bush admin has a massive plan to lease ocean areas to fish farms. apparently, imported fish is the second biggest item in our balance of trade deficit, and this plan will corrrect that and bring in government revenues. I suspect that those who love the conservation won't like the farms as much.

Well, isn't that special. It would be nice if he would also create the worlds largest United States of America sactuary by closing the border.

Maybe he can undo all the restrictions created by Clinton's No BRAINS Initiative which treats the National Electorate like National Welfare Cases.

I wonder what the left will say negative about this... They'll complain that "it's not enough" and attack Bush for not protecting the entire Pacific Ocean.
To: ClaireSolt
I think fish farms if done properly are a good idea. They can take pressure off some fish(redfish, salmon etc.) that really need it. But when the feds protect one area at the demise of another and then cry about how the adjacent area went down, it just makes the phrase stuck on stupid all the more relevant.
We need good fishery mgmt. At a time when nets and long-lines(fishing lines that go for 10-50 miles with thousands of baited hooks that catch everything in the ocean and destroy sport fishing for years to come) can wipe out entire fisheries.(swordfish) But that is not necessarily what we are getting.

The Bush-Kennedy No Child Left Behind program will keep that one in place for generations.
