Confederate flags on space station draw ire
MSNBC ^ | 6/13/06 | James Oberg

Confederate flags flown aboard the international space station — and seemingly signed by a NASA astronaut — showed up last week on the online auction site eBay.

The original eBay listing indicated that the 4-by-6-inch flags were brought aboard the space station by Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov in 2004, and an accompanying photo showed a sample flag that seemed to bear Sharipov’s signature as well as that of Leroy Chiao, his NASA colleague on the station. Yet another photo showed several of the rebel flags floating in a space station module.

The item was pulled from the auction on Monday by the seller, Alex Panchenko of USSR-Russian Air-Space Collectibles Inc. in Los Angeles — and on Tuesday, Panchenko told MSNBC.com that he removed the items from sale because he had concluded the flag and the authentication documents were forgeries.

However, Robert Pearlman, editor and founder of CollectSpace, said he believes the flags are authentic.

“The picture taken of the flags aboard the station says a lot,” he said. “It would be difficult to fake, given the style and I couldn't see the motivation to do so.” The “onboard-the-ISS” stamp, added Pearlman, is not known to have been counterfeited anywhere."

The disappearance of the flags followed a round of criticism over the weekend from former space scientist Keith Cowing, publisher of NASA Watch, an independent Web log. He cited the Confederate flags as an example of “bad judgment on the ISS.”

“You'd think that someone on the U.S. side of the ISS program would have expressed some concern about flying a symbol on the ISS that many Americans associate with slavery,” Cowing wrote.

But when he started on the needless rampage of attempting to make me look like I'd lost my marbles, then it became time to bid him adieu...

You have nobody to blame but yourself for that, madam. All I did was point out inconsistencies and documentation that refuted your charges. Your hissy fit was the result of being challenged not from any fictitious rampage.

Smart I'll grant you, but I'd say she is well-read in southron propaganda only. Her research does not seem to have been at all balanced and appears to have been done with the intent to support her agenda rather than to question anything.

Most southerners who faught, did so in defense of his native state, and had no care about slavery, because they were busting their asses just to feed their families. Some folks seem to conveniantly forget that just as many yankees owned slaves in that era. Lincoln decided to make it politically advantageous for himself to make the war about slavery in '63, with the Emancipation Proclamation (which actually did not free anyone). The south AND the north were as guilty as each other in the slavery issue, and I doubt anyone here actually believes it was right for any American to hold slaves. R.E. Lee did not think succession was a good thing, but told his wife that if it came to the federal government against the southern states, then he would fight for his beloved Virginia. Back then, most were loyal to their state before the federal collection of states.

The sad part about taking away liberties, is that many do not see it as such simply because they have been trained that way, and that is how very successful the propaganda has been. People just refuse to see and/or do anything about the fact that society is imploding. Most definitely it is seen with the personal attacks that have been veiled as, "Oh I'm just an innocent person who is so desperately trying to understand.". Innocent, my foot...

Thank you for the invitation, but I am not really sure if I am related to anyone who fought in the Civil War.

According to the census of 1860 there were 77340 slave owners in Northern states and territories. There were 316,632 slave owners in the confederate states. You might want to take another look at that claim.

Back then, most were loyal to their state before the federal collection of states.

"Citizens, by birth or choice, of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations." But hey, what did George Washington know, right?

The propaganda, madam, is your claim it's all Lincoln's fault.

You might find a little research about the SCV these days interesting. Google "SCV" and "Kirk Lyons" and you'll find plenty.

Have you done any research on Watie's namesake? Very interesting stuff. Sentenced to death by his own tribe for selling them out.

"Just as many?"

So, presumably, "just as many yankees" decided to launch a pre-emptive treasonous war to maintain their slaves?

> Lincoln decided to make it politically advantageous for himself to make the war about slavery in '63

He hardly needed to, since the Soputh had already made the war about slavery in the first place. Read their Secession papers (reproduced in part in this very thread).

I respectfully beg to differ with you on all accounts, Mr. Silverback. First and foremost, I am a great-great granddaughter of a Confederate private from The Army of Tennessee. I am quite proud of this fact. I will always be, and that's, that.

Wasn't that was the army that fled the battlefield at Missionary Ridge before our Union army? Your great great grandpappy's army should be commended for not standing and suffering that day for the slave power. Their flight from Missionary Ridge shortened the rebellion and bloodshed. The country owes them a debt of gratitude for their actions that day.

Let me deal with this first:
actually, i'm NOT the liar here, as most here know. PITY that you evidently haven't figured out who that is.

I assume you're talking about Heyworth. Well, I consider Heyworth a far more credible source than you because he presents evidence to back his claims. HOWEVER, if you'll review my posts to you, you will find that all the problems with your story that I cite are things I found myself or verified personally. When I say there is no record of the unit your ancestor supposedly served in, i say that because I went looking for it. When i say there is no news report supporting yourview of Southern school attendance, i mean I looked for it. X and Heyworth both had valid claims; I verified and expanded on both.

Nobody in this thread lied to me but you.

sorry, but your UTTER disrespect for me personally & your unrelenting requests for me to go do research that i do NOT have time to do, leave me disappointed in YOU as a person & a FReeper.

I have asked you to do nothing that would take any time at all. I have asked you to explain why you claim that you have an ancestor who served in a unit that does not appear to exist. If you know so much about the Civil War from family experience, as you claim, you should be able to explain this discrepancy right off the top of your head. In addition, you would be able to provide some verifiable details about the massacre you claim happened to your family.

If you were telling the truth you would have an explanation. You sir, are a liar. That's why I have no respect for you, because you lie. Prove otherwise or take your actover to DU.

Yeah because of STAND WATIE the Cherokee nation had to endure the trail of tears because he sold their land out from under them and when the tribe sentenced him to death for his crime, coward that he was, he ran away.

A real "hero"

maybe you o mighty one should read up on the yankee slaves .of course that's not pc.

I try to have respect, but I just have to laugh when someone mentions Northern slave states as if it's some revelation, rather than a fact known by any child who pays attention in history class.

In all fairness, I believe that this stained banner should be attached to all these threads from now on, as a sort of truth in advertising.
