Confederate flags flown aboard the international space station and seemingly signed by a NASA astronaut showed up last week on the online auction site eBay.
The original eBay listing indicated that the 4-by-6-inch flags were brought aboard the space station by Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov in 2004, and an accompanying photo showed a sample flag that seemed to bear Sharipovs signature as well as that of Leroy Chiao, his NASA colleague on the station. Yet another photo showed several of the rebel flags floating in a space station module.
The item was pulled from the auction on Monday by the seller, Alex Panchenko of USSR-Russian Air-Space Collectibles Inc. in Los Angeles and on Tuesday, Panchenko told MSNBC.com that he removed the items from sale because he had concluded the flag and the authentication documents were forgeries.
However, Robert Pearlman, editor and founder of CollectSpace, said he believes the flags are authentic.
The picture taken of the flags aboard the station says a lot, he said. It would be difficult to fake, given the style and I couldn't see the motivation to do so. The onboard-the-ISS stamp, added Pearlman, is not known to have been counterfeited anywhere."
The disappearance of the flags followed a round of criticism over the weekend from former space scientist Keith Cowing, publisher of NASA Watch, an independent Web log. He cited the Confederate flags as an example of bad judgment on the ISS.
You'd think that someone on the U.S. side of the ISS program would have expressed some concern about flying a symbol on the ISS that many Americans associate with slavery, Cowing wrote.

Excellent post. I would doubt there are even 2000. In my decades of life in the South, I have met ... drum roll please ... ONE (1) person that claimed membership. Conversly, a young black man I worked with said the reason he migrated from yankeedom to the South was to escape the Klan.
Half a score and one day later it still does!

fwiw, the "leader of the DAMNyankee coven" insisted at one point that the US ARMY's official records were ALL false & could not be believed as "you damned rebs" just write everything "to suit yourself".
fwiw, i charge sixty dollars an hour to do research at the Archives. asking constantly for "citations" on FR is popularly known as "assigning homework". especially since YOU have NOT cited a SINGLE original source, NOBODY here is FOOLED.

my ancestor (considering what had happened to OUR family) was NOT one of them, from what i have read of him.
i'd bet that FEW Jews, who lost family to the NAZI HOLOCAUST, has "forgotten or forgiven", YET!

won some, lost some but still RESPECT him as a honorable combatant.
that is more than i can say for 99% of the other arrogant, MEAN-spirited, DAMNyankee LOUDmouths on FR!

her husband "might have something to say" about your suggestion. fwiw, you owe HER an apology.

DAMNyankees are a bunch of SELF-righteous, LOUDmouthed, HYPOCRITES!
too bad that the DECENT folk north of the M-D line don't expel them, as "socially UNacceptable". (i'm afraid though if the did, that they would send them south & we have NO need for arrogant, hypocritical FOOLS & HATERS.)

"cyborg" , several months ago, documented on another thread that NY state has more KKK-cretins than MS, AL & LA combined AND that the KKK NATIONAL HQ is in OHIO.

Then what would you call the Davis regime and the southern leadership? With their constitution that not only protected slavery but slave imports? With leaders like Davis and Lee and Jackson who believe slavery was the best possible situation for blacks in the confederacy, who would do nothing to interfere with that relationship, and who wanted blacks right where they were, as property, and not as free men and women in the south? By any standard, certainly the standards that you hold Lincoln to, those men were vile, despicable racist monsters. Deserving of the same degree of disgust you direct towards Lincon. Wouldn't you agree?
Either you're willfully blind, simply obtuse, ignorant, or perhaps there remains literature that you have refused to read. What, Mr. Bennett is a liar?
Well perhaps you can point me to some of these racist jokes and stories, or post a few of them for our education? Feel free to bleep out the 'N' bomb, we'll get the picture. And while I have no idea if Mr. Bennett is a liar, I've not seen anything from Lincoln that would fit his description.
No. Lincoln fought hard for the 2nd proposed 13th (Corwin) which would have made slavery PERMANENT. Even without the the seceded states, the Union STILL could not drum up support to end slavery.
If he fought for it why wasn't it adopted by the states. The other 13th Amendment, on the other hand, was pushed for by Lincoln, added to the Republican platform in 1864 at his insistence, passed out of Congress with Lincolns strong support, and was well on the way to ratification when Lincoln was murdered.
Only when it was politically expedient he issued his illegal Proclamation 1) to prevent European nations siding with the Confederacy, 2) to foster a rebellion by blacks in the South against the defenseless old men, women and children remaining there, 3) to entice blacks into fighting for the Union (at reduced wages, no commissions, only under white leadership), and 4) to fool idiots and the gullible into believing that he considered blacks equal.
Not very fond of the idea of freeing slaves, were you. Your ranting aside, the proclamation was not illegal, did not call for rebellion among the blacks in the south, and may have helped enlist blacks into the Union army to fight for their oppressed brothers and sisters held in bondage in the south. And the only idiots around here are ones who would believe your reasons for the proclamation.
Giving credit where credit is due, the blacks of the South refused to rise up and slaughter the old men, women and children. Instead, they remained to help defend their homes from the yankee horde that invaded. Kudos to them.
Hundreds of thousands didn't stick around long when the Union forces appeared in the area, did they. And as for those you said fought for the south, that same confederacy couldn't see its way clear to offering them freedom for their service. Send to war, and then return them to the fields, that was the Davis regime's motto.
lol AT you! (that i do NOT believe. unlike all too many of those on your team, you are NO FOOL.)
you can try to sell that BALONEY elsewhere, as those of us who know you, aren't buying any.

Poor choice of words. By issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln prevented black men and women who were fleeing the inhumane bondage that they labored under in the south from being returned to their owners which the Fugitive Slave laws would had required were they still slaves. OK?
i neither care, nor ever will care, what a bunch of SELF-righteous, arrogant, PREJUDICED,DYs think or do not think, about my style.
frankly, i started "playing with style" (read : breaking the RULES) to irritate the English Department "TWITS", when i was on a college faculty. (i had all the capital letters removed from my typewriter, which really upset the TWITS!)
btw, are YOU a TWIT???

1. Sure they have. Care to give me a link to some of those posts? People saying, "Yeah, that's evidence but it doesn't count?"
2. If I were in your place, and I really believed I was right, and I knew where the evidence was, I would give the person who asked for a cite a direction to go in. "Well, I found it in a book by so and so" or "At the archives in such and such there's a record that says..." But you haven't done that, you just whine about how we don't have any right to expect you to prove anything.
fwiw, i charge sixty dollars an hour to do research at the Archives. asking constantly for "citations" on FR is popularly known as "assigning homework". especially since YOU have NOT cited a SINGLE original source, NOBODY here is FOOLED.
1. As I have said, that is a lie. I cited Sherman's written orders in one of my first posts to you.
2. As I have said, you are just being hypocritical. You whine about "homework" then condemn me for not putting my business on hold to go and dig. Furthermore, I don't care if some other pantwaisted whiners call it "assigning homework," in the real world if you bring charges you must bring evidence.
3. You have yet to even cite a secondary source to back your accusations up.
Let's see if you can even show that an event took place. You claim 92 members of your family were killed by Northern troops. Where and when?
I've met a handful, all from the south.
So I can believe your thus far unsupported rants, or I can believe that Lee and Johnston overlooked tens of thousands of war crimes. Hmmm...not a tough choice.
Tens of thousands of war crimes and you can't show me where to read about it? Riiiiight.
i'd bet that FEW Jews, who lost family to the NAZI HOLOCAUST, has "forgotten or forgiven", YET!
You know, I shouldn't laugh at that, but I am LOL right now, thinking about the kind of fool who would compare Sherman's March, even if everything you said about it were true to the murder of six million Jews. What a joke.
The "Southern Gentleman" act would go over much better if you didn't talk about the boy like he's a disease, and do so as if he's not in "the room." Passive-aggressive stuff like that is for chicks.
No, I'm not a twit. Are you a hate-filled revisionist fossil with no sense of humor or responsibility?
Morris Dees is an interesting character, I will say that. I'd say his influence in the state has been 50/50. Dees is responsible for the demise of the United Klans of America, and of itself, that deserves a major commendation.
