In the controversy over Ann Coulter's comments about the group of 9/11 widows, there is one critical question, from the point of view of ensuring standards of accuracy in the media. How does Coulter know it to be true that, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." There is no evidence whatsoever that those women enjoyed their husbands' deaths, and Coulter offers none. The only "evidence" for this preposterous and hurtful claim is that the women became activists and sought the media spotlight and took a political position at odds with that of Coulter. But what does that prove?
I think Coulter probably would have been correct to say that the women appeared to enjoy the media attention. You don't go on these shows unless you enjoy them to some degree. But enjoying a death? And the death of a loved one when fatherless children were left behind? Coulter's comments are not only false but cruel. She has also made other disparaging personal comments about the women.
In journalism, facts and truth are supposed to matter. Opinions are allowed, and Coulter, a columnist for Human Events and many other newspapers, is entitled to her own opinions.
SNIP
If the matter only involved personal opinions about people or things, Coulter's comments wouldn't really be newsworthy or significant. But she is claiming to have inside knowledge of the personal psychology of this group of women who lost their husbands on 9/11. That is why the comments have generated so much outrageexcept from a few conservatives unwilling to criticize her.

The Left is trying mightily to push her words into the area of "hate speech", thereby making her guilty of a "hate crime". They should pursue this right after they do so with Schumers' "bullet to the head" thing. Not before.
In journalism, facts and truth are supposed to matter.
This, from another obvious graduate of the Dan Rather School of Journalism!
If nothing else, these guys do have entertainment value!

Congratulations on the winning the Definition of Is Prize.
I value honesty--not honesty unless it makes one of our own look bad.
Spin is spin, no matter who's doing it.
Good grief! Talk about hyperbole. At first I was criticizing Ann for being over the top with this line, but the more I see quotes like this the more I'm convinced that she has made a pretty good point.
Others did too. I have a feeling Ann did when she said it. She is just baiting the left to call her on it, then POW, "here is what it means you liberal meatheads".
Probably a jilted ex-boyfriend.
Since you asked me,I will let you display the common courtesy of providing the required quote. But don't take long or you may not get a timely reply.
"If these women were appearing to support the war effort, we'd be lavishing them with praise, and we'd be slamming the DUmmies who attacked them for "standing on their husband's corpses" for political action."
Yes
Words have meaning.
Clearly, Ann is too smart for some Freepers.
Nope. If you read the threads, much smarter people than I have demolished her populist arguments against evolution. She just threw in a chapter about evolution because she knows that's an evangelical, home schooler hot button that would rake in more book sales.
She said, and I quote "How do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce them?"
To me, she is suggesting that we don't know if these women had good marriages or not. Sure, it is a subtle difference, but you cant say from that, that she is suggesting anything.
From your post #7: "Coulter is projecting: she's been dumped so many times for being bitchy, she presumes that's the way every woman is treated."
From your post #17: "It's called Coulterism: if Ann can make up facts about 9/11 widows, facts can be made up about her." (bold added).
Pointing out your self-acknowledged slander is not "pissy." To the contrary, you are getting "pissy" now that you have been caught.
Actually Ann supplies ample evidence that the Jersey Girls are enjoying their husband's death. The problem is that people do not understand English, let alone politics.
Let's say my wife died and I got a big life insurance pay-out. Since the kids are grown, I take the money and travel the world. I start living an opulent life style. I even make a few TV spots on life styles of the Rich and Famous. Would it not be fair to say I am enjoying my wifes death? Certainty! If fact some of my wifes family and friends may even criticize me for not paying more reverence to her death and instead spending the money willy-nilly.
Ann gives ample evidence in her book that the Jersey Girls are enjoying their husbands death form the perspective that they have clearly taken advantage of the death to advance their politics and enrich their lives.
Furthermore, Ann is not the first to take a shot at the celebrity hood of the 911 widows. I would refer you to Law and Order, Season 15, episode 327. A clear shot at the 911 millionaires. Law and order is not a bastion of conservative thought.
'What we seem to have here is a lack of understanding of the meaning of the word "enjoy".'
Exactly. Coulter has her critics tied in knots because, while SHE knows more then the first meaning of words, they won't use a dictionary to save themselves. These people are journalists and don't know what enjoy means?
Can you not see that those of us thinking Ann was over the top with some of those statements are being attacked? On this thread and various others?
So you'll just have to point out which part of my post is hyperbole.
yep.
