Chairman of the Democrat National Committee Howard Dean is supporting Charles Merrill and his same-sex partner Kevin Boyle in their civil disobedience against paying Federal Income Tax because they cannot have the same tax benefits as heterosexual married couples.

Notice where we have gone in a few short years on homosexuals in America. At first, homosexuals wanted “tolerance” – they wanted to do as they pleased and for everyone just to leave them alone.

As I said, with 'two income earners'. The only way married filing jointly comes out ahead, is if all or the vast majority of the income is earned by one person. Two income earners filing as individuals comes out ahead of married filing jointly when all the personal exemptions are taken into account. That was definitely the case a few years back, and I don't think Bush's tax cut fixed that problem.

I think the last tax reform fixed some of the marriage penalty. Let's take the example of two people earning $30,000 each.

Married filing jointly:

$60,000 - $6400 in personal exemptions - $10,000 in standard deduction = $43,600 in taxable income = $5814 owed in tax.

Filing as singles:

$30,000 - $3100 in personal exemption - $5000 in standard deduction = $21,800 in taxable income = $2909 owed in taxes.

Multiply that by 2 and you get $5818 which is identical exept for table round off error. It used to work out that the two single people owed over $1000 less in taxes. So that issue has been corrected.
