BAGHDAD, Iraq - President Bush, seeking to bolster support for Iraq's burgeoning government and U.S. war policy at home, made a surprise visit to Iraq on Tuesday to meet newly named Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and discuss the next steps in the troubled, 3-year-old war.
It was a dramatic move by Bush, traveling to violence-rattled Baghdad less than a week after the death of terror chief Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a bombing attack. The president was expected to be in Baghdad a little more than five hours.
Bush met with al-Maliki in heavily fortified green zone at a palace once used by Saddam Hussein. It now serves temporarily as the U.S. Embassy.
"Good to see you," exclaimed al-Maliki, who didn't know Bush was in Baghdad until five minutes before they met.
"Thanks for having me," Bush responded. They smiled broadly and gave each other a two-handed handshake in the high-domed marble room.
The trip was known only to a handful of aides and a small number of reporters sworn to secrecy because of obvious security threats for Bush and members of his entourage.

Great news.
Sadly, this is one of the first times ever that the CNN e-mail news alert beat Free Republic. Usually that are several hours behind the pajamahadeen.
That's great news!!! This is definitely Bush's week -- Zarqawi dead, Rove cleared, Bush in Baghdad. I bet Bush's poll numbers will jump back above 50% soon. And when the Marines are cleared of the Haditha 'incident' (and Murtha is turned out in Nov) and Pelosi is crying in her beer, it will definitely be Morning in America again.
I don't think Pelosi drinks beer. More like Chardonnay from Napa Valley, no less.
Marvelous W! Now go pee on what's left of Zarqawi's "safe house".
I thought Bush was in Camp David.
Just saw TomGuy's

That's what I heard on the morning news. He was in Camp David but talking face-to-face via teleconference with the Iraqi government officials.
Guess the face-to-face part was right, but the teleconference part was wrong.
Any word yet of the reaction from the troops of finding their Commander in Chief amongst them? Hooaahh!!!
I have it on good authority from some blonde person named Kristinn that this is simply a photo op.
I forgot to add that atheist Newdow's suit to get IN GOD WE TRUST off US money has been turned down by the SCOTUS.
Now you just watch people, I predict that before the day is out, that the DUmmies and their Bush-hating brethren will be voicing the idea that "perhaps" some friends or family of Zarqawi will take "revenge" on President Bush while he is in Baghdad.
Mark my words.
And pray for our President's safety.
God bless President Bush!! What a man!!!
Hillary will be furious about this and will be making preparations for her own visit to Baghdad, just like that Thanksgiving visit a few years back.
He's just doing this to take the attention off of Karl Rove not being indicted.. uh..er wait..uh...never mind.
More likely, the Dems will claim that it's a campaign stump, intended to boost the President's abismal poll ratings.
>>>Dems will claim that it's a campaign stump
It is... it's part of the military campaign. The Dems always seem to forget about that one.
