PHILADELPHIA - City officials are expected to file a complaint Monday against an English-only ordering policy at Genos Steaks, one of Philadelphias best-known cheesesteak joints that has entered the national immigration debate.
Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Genos has posted small signs telling customers, This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING SPEAK ENGLISH. Were alleging that the sign itself is enough of an unwelcoming message that it may violate the Fair Practices Act, Rachel Lawton, acting executive director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Owner Joseph Vento, 66, whose grandparents struggled to learn English after immigrating from Sicily in the 1920s, said he posted the sign about six months ago amid concerns over immigration reform and the increasing number of customers who could not order in English when they wanted Phillys gooey, greasy specialty fried steak, sliced or chopped, in a long roll, with cheese and fried onions.
They dont know how lucky they are. All were asking them to do is learn the English language, said Vento. Were out to help these people, but theyve got to help themselves, too.

Because he wants to be a bigger jerk than that. :~)
He *does* have the "right to refuse service" sign. It's just below the "Speak English" sign.
That's what started this whole thing - someone thought the two went together - that if they couldn't order in English, they would be refused service.
He does have that sign, posted just below the "Speak English" sign.
Any business where the "public" can walk in and order a good or service is now considered public property.
The owner of that property is now a public servant who must run his business for the Marxist common good, as defined by the state. All decisions in that business made for individual benefit may be trumped at any time by the Marxist common good.
The Marxist common good shall be defined in any way and in any manner and at any time depending upon the mood of the politician or bureaucrat to achieve any goal he desires.
In the meantime, the business owner must continue to pay taxes, submit to rules made up by unelected bureaucrats and generally kiss the ass of any politician who demands it.
Failure to do so may cause that individual to lose his de facto private business that carries out the mandates of the Marxist common good.
Go for it Swannie. Buy a steak at Geno's
Press 2 for Spanish, then proceed to speak English.
If I were unfortunate enough to live in Philly, I would eat at this guy's restaurant every day.
