PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush are attending a private social event this evening before GWB heads back to Camp David for the two-day conference on Iraq.
Here's a story I came across yesterday, but which seemed appropriate to post for you on Sunday. A Democrat Congresswoman wants to meet with President Bush about her bill to increase stem cell research funding. President Bush is threatening a veto. For all the carping around FR about how GWB is not conservative, he is holding the line on issues such as this bill, which even former President Ronald Reagan would probably have signed.
Rep. DeGette Requests Meeting With President Bush On Embryonic Stem Cell Research Bill
10 Jun 2006 Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) last week said she has requested a face-to-face meeting with President Bush regarding a bill (HR 810) she has co-sponsored that would expand federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research, the Denver Post reports (Mulkern, Denver Post, 6/5).
Bush on Aug. 9, 2001, announced a policy that allows federal funding for embryonic stem cell research only when it uses stem cell lines created on or before that date. DeGette's bill, which was approved by the House last year, would allow federal funding for research using stem cells derived from embryos originally created for fertility treatments and willingly donated by patients.
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), sponsor of the Senate version of the bill (S 471), in October 2005 said that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) agreed to make consideration of the bill a priority when Congress reconvened in January 2006. Frist last month said the Senate will debate three separate bills on stem cell research, but he did not stipulate which measures would be discussed (Kaiser Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 6/2).
DeGette -- during a phone interview from London, where she went to examine stem cell research efforts in the United Kingdom -- said from what she knows, none of the bills Frist is considering to bring to the Senate floor would affect HR 810. Bush has said he would veto the bill if it were passed by the Senate. "All I request is that [Bush] sit down face-to-face with me and let me try to explain the impact this bill will have on the millions of people who suffer from ... diseases," such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and type 1 diabetes, DeGette said.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who supports HR 810, believes it is possible to obtain the 67 votes in the Senate necessary to override a presidential veto, his spokesperson Peter Carr said. However, the House last year voted 238-194 to approve the bill, short of the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: How ironic is this -- An Iraqi boy holds a picture of President George W. Bush found amongst the rubble of the "safe house" in the village of Hibhib near Baquba where Abu Musab al-Zarqawi died. Someone in that house, perhaps Zarqawi himself, had a photo of the Commander-in-Chief whose orders led to Zarqawi's death.
SWwwweeeet!!! :)

Looks like tis you today!
Congrats!

I like this photo and think it's a perfect exclamation point to the one above. It's of the President when he spoke about al-Zarqawi's demise in the Rose Garden last week.

President Bush salutes guests as he and First Lady Laura Bush return to the White House from a weekend at the presidential retreat at Camp David today. (There was probably at least one member of the military among the guests.) The first couple will be attending a long-planned social event tonight. The President returns to Camp David either late tonight or early tomorrow for his two-day conference on Iraq.

The first couple as they walked across the South Lawn today on their return to the White House.

Yahoo reposted this nice photo by way of mentioning our Dubya's upcoming 60th birthday. It's of President Bush with his daughters Barbara and Jenna at an Inaugural Ball, January 2005.
The President, who turns 60 on July 6, joked that six decades is "not that old" and blamed his gray hair on his twin daughters' teenage antics.

The famous lopsided Cheney smile was on display at the recent Naval Academy graduation ceremonies where the Vice President was the commencement speaker.

Jack Jensen, 5, of Arizona, carries cadet caps at the U.S. Naval Academy after the graduation ceremony. Vice President Dick Cheney spoke to the graduates about the continuing war on terror, including restating the importance and legality of the Terrorist Surveillance Program which monitors international communications.

Next time you hear some Congressional weenie whine about how the Administration hasn't informed them about this or that, remember this photo. The President and Vice President discuss events in Iraq with members of Congress in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, June 7, 2006 -- before news of al-Zarqawi's death broke.

I consider that to be one of the best photos of Bush posted on these threads. The photo isn't the quality of the photo though. It's the poignancy of the child holding up the photo in Iraq, and where that photo must have been prior to the blast. Great shot.

Gretchen, as promised: Knowing there might be young children who see this thread, I'm posting links only to photos of Zarqawi in death for those who did not see them last week. First, pics of Zarqawi and his "spiritual adviser" in life.
An undated photo of al-Zarqawi in life.

An image of Sheikh Abdul-Rahman, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's spiritual adviser, that was displayed during a U.S. militray briefing in Baghdad, 08 June, 2006. Sheikh Abdul-Rahman was killed along with Zaraqwi.
