Cosby charms, chastises conventioneers

Bill Cosby didn't waste a second Saturday afternoon giving an almost entirely black audience at the Georgia World Congress Center exactly what they probably expected, which, in the comedian's words, was a "whuppin'."

"It has come to this," Cosby said, reprimanding his hosts and the audience as he took the podium, following civil rights leader Andrew Young at the 20th Annual 100 Black Men of America convention.

"Who would think that Andy Young would be sitting and I would be standing last to be the keynote speaker? Either they [the sponsors of the event] don't know. Or they tend to forget. Andy Young, every day, always has to be remembered by us."

Anything less from Cosby would have been a disappointment. The audience of about 500 who half-filled the Sidney Marcus auditorium, and also heard brief comments from Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox in a session titled "Celebrating Our Legacy," came expecting a chastising.

Cosby pounding on the "home truths" again. When will he be more than a lone voice in the wilderness?

Bill Cosby is a very, very great man. He's a living example to all of us about our responsibility to care about each other.

He is saying things about black culture that no white person can say, although many, many, think it.

God bless and keep him safe.

I wish he'd run for President.

Thank god, I thought it was a story concerning Rita Cosby trying to charm and chastise conventioneers

...dressed in black leather. (Phew) So it was just a bad nightmare I had last night.

Cosby's right, of course, and all wise and benevolent people can be expected to support what he is trying to do.

The people of the segregated South yielded to the demands of the Civil Rights Revolution of the 1960's and '70's when and only because they realized that the Revolution was a grass roots revolution, coming from the heart of African America; i.e. that Rosa Parks spoke for Black America, and so did Patrick Henry.

The people of the South had stubbornly and successfully resisted previous attempts, by white people of other parts of the nation, to impose integration upon them; however, when they realized that the Revolution was springing from the heart of Black America, they knew that resistance was futile and that the long anticipated end to legalized segregation--and probably segregation of all types--had finally come. Their resistance ceased. They accepted integration, and a feeling of relief swept over a previously reluctant but now willing South.

Cosby seems to be the herald of a new revolution. Should it be so, a welcomed wave of relief and joy will sweep over the entire nation.

Thank you for this link to someone who is trying to help lead black youths and black prisoners towards responsibility.

You are right.  Bill Cosby, unlike people such as Jesse Jackson, actually cares about his people and wants them to realize that they are going no where staying the social course they are on right now.

They should start listening to people like him and get rid of people like Farrakan, who are holding them back ... on purpose.

"Parents, when you've got that music playing in your car and your children are listening to it," he said, after mimicking a rapper. "That [words and obscene language] become like 'pass the salt' to your child."
