Student barred from wearing T-shirt receives apology from school officials

“We applaud these school officials, who realized they cannot censor students based on their viewpoint, particularly when students promoting an opposing view are permitted to express their opinions freely,” said ADF Litigation Counsel Timothy Chandler.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A Springfield High School student told to remove a T-shirt stating her views on moral issues on the April 27 Day of Truth has received an apology from school officials, who informed her that she will be allowed to wear the shirt on campus in the future. On May 18, ADF attorneys sent a letter to the school administration advising them that the student’s First Amendment rights were violated when she was forced to remove the shirt.

“The First Amendment rights of students do not end at the schoolhouse gate,” said ADF Litigation Counsel Timothy Chandler. “We are pleased school officials recognized that this student’s constitutional rights had been violated.”

The student, a sophomore, wore her custom-made shirt to school with the message, “I am a Christian, and I am against homosexuality, abortion, pre-marital sex, and drugs.” Although not an official Day of Truth T-shirt, the student was one of several at Springfield High School who participated in the Day of Truth. A school official saw the shirt and told the student it was not allowed and must be removed. Other students wearing similar shirts were also asked to remove them.

The Day of Truth is an annual event that provides an opportunity for participating students to express a different perspective than the Day of Silence. The Day of Silence is promoted by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network and asks students to remain silent throughout an entire day to express their support for the homosexual agenda.

Some students at Springfield High School wore clothing supporting the Day of Silence and were reportedly allowed to continue their observance unhindered

“Our client’s shirt did not cause a disruption or distraction of any sort on campus,” Chandler explained. “We applaud these school officials, who realized they cannot censor students based on their viewpoint, particularly when students promoting an opposing view are permitted to express their opinions freely.”

ADF is a legal alliance defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation.

These school officials were clearly favoring the homosexual activists on their Day of Silence in allowing them to wear clothing in support of homosexuality. When the Day of Truth came around it was a different story.

We are becoming immune to the outrageous! Why on earth is a public school having a day of silence to promote the homosexual agenda?

I absolutely cannot see how any parent can keep their kids in public schools that do things like this!

By them, I hope you mean the NEA. I think a full boat scholarship + enough to live for as long as she wants to attend classes and passes would be more just. This is a criminal organization, and needs to be prosecuted under RICO statutes along with the ACLU.

Why on earth is a public school having a day of silence to promote the homosexual agenda?

I agree. I do think the Day of Silence could be used for one good thing minus the homesexual stuff. It could be a day for my class to remain silent all day for once. If it worked, I could make every day a day of silence. :)

Because the homosexual activists have infiltrated the public school system and are on a mission to seduce and convert more likeminded cultists

I didn't ask that, Basil did. I replied it. While I've never seen the stuff in my area schools, I do keep a lookout to prevent it from appearing.

I absolutely cannot see how any parent can keep their kids in public schools that do things like this!

However, would we want to turn a multi-billion dollar tax payer funded entity over to the likes of liberals? And this is where I support those who stand up for what is right in the quarters of liberal education.

You both make good points--but personally, I wouldn't allow my kids to be part of this.

If you really want to hear some horror stories, talk to folks in MA. After seeing what is happening there, my fear is that it is spreading across government schools nation wide.
