"Universal Pen" creator Wang Jiang is a product of Microsoft's Research Lab in Beijing.
Wang was a reluctant convert to the MS lab. He had to give up his position as a professor of psychology at Zhejiang University.
In the end he developed the handwriting software used in Microsoft Tablet PCs; it can instantly take writing from a piece of paper and put it on a computer screen....
My dad used to say my writing looked like Chinese to him...but when I went to China, the Chinese couldn't read it either. Is it really possible a PC could read what no one else can?

In any event the Microsoft center in Beijing has produced another very colorful character and deserves kudos for doing so, I think.

They had an interesting article about him and some other guy from the Beijing Lab in Fast Company a year or so ago.

Warning, urban legend ahead: Back in the 60's, NASA drew up a requirement for a writing instrument suitable for operation by both right-handed and left-handed astronauts in both weightless and high-acceleration environments. After much research, Parker developed a gas-operated pen meeting all NASA's requirements for about $50 apiece.
The Soviets took a look at the requirements and announced "We can meet those requirements at less than a ruble apiece." They then pulled out a pencil...
