Local Florida Police Attempt to Block Collection of Pro-Marriage Petitions

Local Police Attempt to Block Collection of Pro-Marriage Petitions Agape Press - June 7 ,2006 A pro-family group in Florida is outraged over the behavior of some police officers last weekend who tried to stop a petition drive aimed at protecting traditional marriage. Last weekend members of the Florida Family Policy Council were at a Promise Keepers conference in Broward County where they were collecting petitions for the Florida4Marriage campaign, an effort to get onto the November 2008 ballot an amendment protecting traditional marriage. The pro-family group had paid a fee to have a booth at the PK event at which it was collecting the petitions in support of the campaign`s goal of gathering 611,009 signatures by July 12, 2006.

Then in what the group calls a "stunning display of unprofessional conduct," several members of the City of Sunrise Police Department arrived at the scene and ordered Council vice president Nathan Dunn to stop collecting the petitions, and then removed the petitions from public view. A discussion ensued, during which John Stemberger -- president and general counsel for the Council -- was summoned to the scene. The group says Stemberger`s request for an explanation of what law or ordinance was being violated was ignored by Police Sergeant Stephen Allen, who it says then began lecturing nearby volunteers on what Jesus taught about homosexuality, claiming that the petition effort was a waste of time and that he was the authority and they should obey him.

This whole story is crazy...

Promise Keepers are a group of, totally dedicated to the family, church members from many denominations.

Why would anyone NOT expect them to be collecting signatures?

I am away from Florida right now but that lower East Coast area is known for being "out of touch". Remember they can't count votes either!

Is this not a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, out near I-95 ?

Even if you disregard the whole story, this one photo tells of their disrespect and arrogance! The only thing that is missing is the shirts aren't "brown"

I hope to see a follow up that these guys are disciplined or canned. There needs to be a message sent now that this will not be tolerated or the lib/socialists will capitalize on this and it will become the modus operandi - and it's a short step to a police state

I'm finding it hard to believe that 5 police officers

Coming from a law enforcement family - I can understand you find it hard to believe - but, how then do you explain the obvious disdain and disrespect that this photo shows? Did someone force them to act so blatantly unprofessional>?

Sometimes, it's helpful to read the whole article - AND get a better "picture"?

Oh good grief

If you are not already in liberal politics, you are missing your calling.

your post is one of the most convoluted spins on a story I've seen in a long time

One picture = thousand words.

you can't 'splain this photo away ...

The best lib/socialist spinner couldn't spin this one as 'professional' officers of the law

Sergent Allen is a Christian. "Police Sergeant Stephen Allen, who it says then began lecturing nearby volunteers on what Jesus taught about homosexuality" Isn't this just one Christian trying to force his version of Christianity on other Christians? Not being a Christian, this is certainly confusing to me. If Jesus says homosexuality is good, why are "Christians" fighting over this?

Hmmm, well, obviously, we can believe your statement that you are not a Christian or you would know better what the Bible says on the subject - and since you aren't, why don't you do a little research on just the Bible DOES have to say about homosexuality before you assume such absurdity?

Here, I'll help you out with a couple:

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination." (Lev 18:22)

"If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." (Lev 20:13)

Having spent a lot of time in Florida, I find it very easy to believe, especially in Broward county.

"I believe, in other words, this is a subtle and "early phase" attempt to intimidate conservatives."
Yep. Most often the evils that prevail, start slowly, subtle in nature, so as not alarm the average joe or jane on the street. Mustn't allow the snake out of the bag to soon. All things must be carefully staged and timed.

I'm not sure a breathalyzer can detect the condition known as "drunk on power." IMHO that is what you had there.

Agreed. Like the panther in the woods in a way---tread carefully quiet until you get close enough to pounce. The thing that is a little different from the panther is that really, we can see what they are doing. We don't react for a variety of reasons in the early stages. We say it's logical such as: the problem is too small now, a reaction is not warranted. However, we are slowly walking down the road of being intimidated without realizing it (like they say you can boil a frog by increasing the heat gradually and by the time he realizes he's in trouble he's already too cooked to respond).

It reminds me of the time I was walking down the street behind a couple other guys having a quiet conversation, I wasn't paying much attention. Suddenly, the one guy, a much smaller Asian guy, took a couple steps back and started shouting at the first guy at the top of his lungs. The other guy, a pretty large white guy, muscular but also fat, had apparently been "working in close and quiet" with this guy and gradually getting ready to intimidate him, somehow. As soon as the Asian guy realized it, he stepped back---helped neutralize the big guy's strength advantage and reduce the possibility of being trapped in some kind of grappling battle---and cranked the volume up to the maximum. The white guy collapsed quite quickly---no way was ready to deal with this and he clearly underestimated his potential foe.

I don't know, but I guarantee they are Leftists---regardless of what they are on the surface.

Let us hope enough young Amerians despite their rather silly new fads and ways of learning etc., will see the dangers clearly in the years to come. And be willing to take a stand when they start to get scared $hitless that things do not seem to be what they at first appear, and move to the right, to at least diminish the dreams of the far left liberal/socialist movements, in their vast array of slightly differing forms.

Well, why am I surprised? I'm a native of Broward, who moved out in disgust 7 years ago. No way was I going to rear two young daughters in that place any longer.

Sunrise, a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale (Broward County), has a history of corruption in both their city council and former police department.

I believe that the Broward Sheriff's Office took over police duties in Sunrise a few years ago, but their reputation is not much better.

And let's not forget, Broward is the poster child of the Democrat Party.
