Good on Imus: Catches Boettcher Spinning Bombing as Response to Zarqawi Killing

Thanks to a lead from FReeper YaYa123, I'm able to report the following:

On today's 'Imus in the Morning', Don Imus called NBC reporter Mike Boettcher on his attempt to spin a bombing in Baghdad as a 'not good' response to the killing of Zarqawi.

Here's how it went down. Boettcher was reporting from Baghdad and had this to say:

"We have the response here now [to the Zarqawi killing] and it is not good. There has been another bombing. Thirteen people are dead in central Baghdad. That is apparently the current reaction from the insurgents to Zarqawi's death."

Imus: "How do we know that's a reaction to that, Mike?"

Boettcher immediately started to back down: "We don't know for sure, Don. You are right."

Imus: "This could be just another bombing. They are trying to blow the place up everyday."

A by-now abject Boettcher: "You are absolutely right."

Bravo, Imus, for calling Boettcher on this. Would Matt Lauer or another NBC host have done the same, or would they have uncritically bought into Boettcher's spin?

A more confirmable reaction to how the death of Zarqawi is bad is to check with the Democrat party leadership.

"One Way or Another" was Blondie, not Melanie.

Blondie rocks, and Debbie Harry could belt it with the best, or carry a high tune like a songbird.

Melanie, on the other hand, sang the amazingly moronic song about having a brand-new pair of rollerskates.

Dem leadership too busy trying to figure out how to spin their loss in California into a win of some sorts.

Don't conclude from this that Imus is on our side, but he does call the MSM on their actions sometimes.

Have we heard from John McCain on this? Hillary Clinton?

At least Joe Biden was on the TODAY show, and he was most reasonable, rational, and coherent. Joe Lieberman was on Imus.

Anyone seen or heard from Hagel? Russ Feingold?

My Bad....where is my coffee...my girls loved that rollerskate song though and I loved Blondie too! Oh what was I thinking here....wasn't Melanie a piano player or something in Augusta, Georgia? I remember a blind girl from Augusta made a hit record then noone heard from her for quite a while.

NPR spun this earlier to say that this was in essence (paraphrasing) "a good thing for Al-Qaeda since Zarqawi was a bit of an upstart and a competitor to Osama Bin Laden and Zwahiri" (spelling?).

Laura Ingraham commenting on it now.

What a singular moment: Boettcher admits that everything he'd said up until Imus called him on it was HIS OWN MERE SPECULATION.

And then Boettcher tried blaming his answer on being confused by "too much feedback" in his earpiece.

How lame are one's journalistic standards if Imus is able to call you on them.

Melanie, on the other hand, sang the amazingly moronic song about having a brand-new pair of rollerskates.

Confession time: I still have that LP album ("Candles In The Rain") in my record collection. In my defense I can only offer that the college girlfriend who insisted I buy it was really hot.

Did you have the brand new pair of roller skates or did you have the brand new key?

wasn't Melanie a piano player or something in Augusta, Georgia?

Was she the one that wrote, "Look what they've done to my song, ma?"

I heard a great big band arrangement of that tune that won some sort of "Arrangement of the Year" award back in 1974 or so.

Naturally, the point of the arrangement was to re-construct the song in many different ways, none of which sounded like the original version.

No radio, no tv, so really hoped to see this exchange somewhere. Excellent. Thanks.

McGruff, as always, thanks for this thread.

"NPR spun this earlier to say that this was 'a good thing for Al-Qaeda ..."

I heard this, as well. NPR also suggested that Zarqawi's rivals within the "insurgency" in Iraq informed the U.S. of his location.

ABC had Richard Clarke on this morning and he said that this really won't change anything. Zarqawi was one of 20-40,000 insurgents in Iraq.
