Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was Iraq's most notorious insurgent - a shadowy figure associated with spectacular bombings, assassinations and the beheading of foreign hostages.
The Jordanian-born militant first appeared in Iraq as leader of the Tawhid and Jihad insurgent group, merging it in late 2004 with Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
But most information on him was restricted to what his enemies and supporters have attributed to him.
While many analysts argued he had used Iraqi insurgency as a springboard to expand his operations, others said his influence was exaggerated.
Pretext for war
In the run-up to the Iraq war in February 2003, US Secretary of State Colin Powell told United Nations that Zarqawi was an associate of Osama Bin Laden who had sought refuge in Iraq.
Intelligence reports indicated he was in Baghdad and - according to Mr Powell - this was sure sign that Saddam Hussein was courting al-Qaeda, which, in turn, justified an attack on Iraq.
But some analysts at the time contested the claim, pointing to Zarqawi's historical rivalry with Bin Laden.
Both men rose to prominence as "Afghan Arabs" - leading foreign fighters in the "jihad" against Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s.
It was a far cry from Zarqawi's youth as a petty criminal in Jordan, remembered by those who knew him as a simple, quick-tempered and barely literate gangster.
But after the defeat of the Soviets in Afghanistan, Zarqawi went back to Jordan with a radical Islamist agenda.
Sentenced to death
He spent seven years in prison there, accused of conspiring to overthrow the monarchy and establish an Islamic caliphate.
Not long after his release under a general amnesty, he fled the country.
Jordan tried him in absentia and sentenced him to death for allegedly plotting attacks on American and Israeli tourists.

Allegedly? He was convicted. Nothing allegedly about it. In addition he blew up a prominent Arab's wedding party - and bragged about it - in Jordan - not even mentioned by the BBC...
The "sophisticated" BBC? Sophisticated at misrepresenting the facts.
Seriously though, The Chickie Dicks are their own worst enemy. The Military is thwarting the evil trio of political ignorance by boycotting their CD's and their concerts. Families and friends of the Military are also joining in boycotting those 3 Ditzy Chicks.

If I remember correctly, he would have only needed one of those sneakers. And he would have hopped, not run, fast. Does not matter now though. With any luck all that is left is a positive dental record.

Before the US killed him he was an example of how inept we are because we couldn't touch the baddest man in the land. After we killed him, he wasn't such a bad guy after all.

I read the obit. Unreal. In successive paragraphs: "believed to", "supposedly", "thought to have", "believed to have", "was blamed for".
They make him sound like Mary Poppins.
As of this very minute - 5:36 p.m Singapore time (5:36 a.m. EST) - DU has a total of 108 entries on this dead guy (reminds me of Batman I, when the Joker (Jack) fries the guy with his hand buzzer and says "you know what? I'm glad you're dead") while FreeRepublic has approx. 1600 entries.
So who is soft on security? (oh, yeah, they support the troops - I forgot)

Right. His own family disowned him, and last year his tribe detribalized him -- that's a very big deal, it's like a dishonorable discharge.
From that moment on, his only options were victory or death. Well, surrender, but that isn't realistic. Although people close to him have been deciding to roll the dice a while longer rather than go straight to the doe-eyed buggeree boys that they are promised in the Koran.

Whatever or however the BBC says, still don't alter the facts. The 'gentleman' has passed on and he won't be coming back.And the vast majority hear are delighted to hear it.
At least he doesn't have to worry about figuring out how to use that machine gun anymore. I hope he suffered before he finally kicked it.
