ALBANY - State GOP Chairman Stephen Minarik, who just knocked William Weld out of the race for governor, will now try to do the same with Republican Senate hopeful Katherine "KT" McFarland, The Post has learned.
Minarik, backed by other GOP leaders, will publicly urge McFarland, a Reagan-era Pentagon official, to drop out of the Senate race today "in the interest of party unity," a source familiar with Minarik's thinking said.
Minarik will urge GOP voters to rally around former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, who defeated McFarland, 63 percent to 36 percent, at last week's party nominating convention, as the best candidate to defeat Democratic incumbent Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"Spencer did better at the convention than John Faso did against Bill Weld, and Weld was gracious enough to step aside and avoid a primary. Steve hopes 'KT' will do the same," said the source.
"We need to rally behind one candidate in order to effectively challenge Hillary Clinton. John Spencer is the official designee of the party and he clearly has the support of the grass roots."
Spencer is more conservative than McFarland on social issues and would unite the Republican and Conservative parties behind a single candidate, as Faso has now done.
Minarik's appeal to McFarland will come with some urgency.
She has only until Thursday to notify the state Board of Elections that she doesn't want her name to appear on the Sept. 12 primary ballot.

Ah sweet satisfaction! I am waiting until her announcement before I break out the party hats and noisemakers.
I read on NY 1 news that she is refusing to quit. She's a nutjob!
She is a stab-and-kill abortion lover and is probably putting this above party interests.
I think the "grassroots" of the Republican party in NY (ie anyone who thinks Hillary is actually too liberal) has finally been discovered.
I think the NY GOP is better to purge its RINO's, even if they're more "electable." I'm actually somewhat encouraged.
This Minarik fellow has some balls and should promptly be promoted to national GOP chairman.
I am personally amazed how much support Hillary has upstate... I don't understand it... but I am amazed by it.
The stalwart Ed Cox, who was treated shamefully by this shapeshifting crew, should lead the state party.
Celebrity-itis. The disease of the essentially nonpolitical and pathetically ill-informed.
I know. I'm surprised too. But there are a bunch of towns upstate that she only goes to, Utica, Buffalo, Albany that are predominently Democrat. She tends to ONLY go to those places so it looks like all of upstate is for her.
((((((PING))))))
Well upstate is what put her in office, not NYC... so she's got some support up there somewhere.
"Purge" is the right word. RINOS are a cowardly puky lot...and we are saddled with them in New York.
I keep telling local RINOS the same thing. They cozy up to the unions and then get stabbed at election time.
Even the Dem Mayor of Albany talks about the unions as running (and ruining) the city.
Meanwhile we're going to have a unionized private daycare? Pataki may add to the problem with unions? This is why the NY GOP can't keep trying to find someone Dems would vote for...and instead change the Dems to the conservative viewpoint. Nowhere exc California is the failure of liberal policies more evident.
We don't need to vote. Be reasonable agree with me.
I am, too.
This is a novel experience.
LOL "twenty lashes with a wet noodle for you"
Our county has endorsed Spencer. Get out of the way, K.T.!
Anything north of the city is "upstate".
She doesn't care for black flies too much. ;)
One of my daughters lives in the Albany area. Her best friend invited her to her house. My daughter walked into the woman's kitchen, saw a huge photo of Hillary on the fridge and laughed outloud. The woman's mother, Connie Burns, is one of Hill's best buds. I told my daughter to keep her ears peeled for any inside info.
