A former Republican congressman narrowly beat his Democratic rival early Wednesday for the right to fill the House seat once held by imprisoned Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a race closely watched as a possible early barometer of next fall's vote.
Republican Brian Bilbray emerged victorious after a costly and contentious race against Democrat Francine Busby, a local school board member who ran against Cunningham in 2004.
With 90 percent of precincts reporting, Bilbray had 56,016 votes or 49.5 percent. Busby trailed with 51,202 votes or 45 percent. "I think that we're going back to Washington," Bilbray told a cheering crowd of supporters.
The race one of dozens of election contests in eight states was viewed by Democrats as an opportunity to capture a solidly Republican district and build momentum on their hopes to capture control of the House

This kind of a moment would require a fine CIGAR!
(Not the Clinton type use though)
Bring in the Tyrants in the black robes!!!
Really? I guess you have never heard of the "Gang of 14" (and their deliberate effort to sabotage Frist's intentions to trigger the "Nuclear Option") which include the following RINO:
Republicans:
John S. McCain III, Arizona
Lindsey O. Graham, South Carolina
John Warner, Virginia
Olympia Snowe, Maine
Susan M. Collins, Maine
R. Michael DeWine, Ohio
Lincoln Chafee, Rhode Island
Wow, that was close! they only lost by a slim 825,000+ vote count.
Six weeks ago the Field Poll results.........52% Yea and 39% No.
The real questions is when will those republicans demanding purity learn that any republican is better than a dem that becomes part of a dem sweep in November. The funding for our troops will be withdrawn and the impeachment hearings will begin.
Thanks for the correction. I think I heard the story both ways but unfortunately remembered it the wrong way. I remember writing Bilbray a real nasty E-Mail once but can't remember what he did to set me off.
Most people would call Bilbray a moderate Republican but I'm inclined to call him a liberal Republican at about the same level as Senator Susan Allen of Maine--but better than Chafee or Olympia Snowe. I would guess he supports Bush on the war but can't say that for certain.
No wonder the initiative went down the terlet. Only a MEATHEAD could come up with something so stupid!
I think it sends a strong signal. Bilbray was as good as gold on the one issue that America most cares about. He rejected advice that he be "politically correct" and avoid the issue.
Somebody here summed it up brilliantly. If Bilbray refuses the big issue, Busby bludgeons him with "culture of corruption."
For once, we weren't "the stupid party." Bilbray is the example of how to win elections this year.
Busby went on to say that she would work to get social security and health care for the illegals.
Haven't you noticed. FreeRepublic has a contingency of Donner Party Conservatives and Unappeasable Party Republicans.
I didn't listen, but he's sounded a little bored the last few shows. None of the things he's covered has lit his candle and the show has kind of drifted. It started the middle of last week.
But at least he doesn't say "I've never seen anything like this," or "Why am I talking about this? You don't care." Savage says that stuff everyday.
Bilbray, on Hannity, mentioned Mon. evening that Busby had NEVER gotten above 45%, so I was pretty confident. This guy is a RINO on everything except illegals, so it will be an interesting test when he votes pro-choice or pro-homosexual marriage, how those who were strong on him for his border position come out. I personally think right now ALL other issues except WOT and border have to take a back seat. These are the defining issues of our lifetime.

The Democrat Crime Syndicate should be voted into extinction.
You actually think that Arlen Specter is better then most Democrats.
Since there is 5% missing, that was the Minuteman. So it was actually 55/45 against miss rat.
I guess they couldn't get enough invaders "without papers" to the polls.

The California Race [John Podhoretz]
Republican Brian Bilbray has won the much-discussed race to fill the House seat of the now-imprisoned Duke Cunningham. This will come as a blow to Democrats and mediacrats who, as usual, got themselves all excited about taking a safe GOP seat as a harbinger of Republican disaster come November. But the question is whether Republicans are going to get overexcited by the results too, and overestimate the meaning of this victory which may simply be a very mild indicator that the public is not, in fact, in a revolutionary mood.

Well, I plainly try to be in the middle there. I voted for Bush one over Perot. I believe we have a party to reform and work through. I often battle the Bush supporters here but the difference is I wholeheartedly support Republican candidates and do not expect them to agree with me except on a few select issues. Since I live in Tucson, you know immigration is one of them. Bilbray was right on that.
The five percent who supported the independent candidate played into Busby's hands the way the Perotistas gave us Clinton. Anytime the GOP candidate makes credible moves toward the conservative position, he or she should be supported.
If I'm not mistaken, Bilbray claimed to be for the marriage amendment. That's two issues he has moved towards us. I'm hopeful for more. He's up again in November.
