WASHINGTON (AP) - A House panel voted Tuesday to throw a roadblock in front of an Internal Revenue Service plan that would use private collection agencies to chase unpaid tax debts.
The House Appropriations Committee voted 29-27 to prevent the IRS from using money appropriated to the agency for fiscal 2007 to set up the program. President Bush had asked lawmakers to give the tax collectors $54 million to get the operation running.
Rep. Steve Rothman, D-N.J., who wrote the amendment, said the program should be stopped to protect taxpayers from exposure to privacy breeches.

and Bush supported this outrage.
The solution to the problem is right there in front of them.
IMO This one is just a matter of time. A possible reprieve for the moment it is more a when will happen, not if it will happen.
If anyone would like to be added to this ping list let me know.
John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.
H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.
most cheaters are dishonest people - its not they don't pay because taxes are too complicated, they don't pay because they want to keep the money for themselves.
bump for later.
Hmmm... I'm trying to remember the last cheater I knew that was honest :)
...and Bush supported this outrage.

Yes, like he signed the anti-Constituional McCain-Feingold crap legislation, like he supports the illegals and their breaking of our laws and violation of our soveringty.
Washington is out of control, drunk on its political power, drunk on our tax dollars, with absolutely no accountability. And don't expect ANY change in our tax system to make it more fair to the taxpayer -- major joke -- it is a political weapon for the Washington elite, to use to gain control and keep control -- LEGISLATION FOR SALE --- sad but an absolute truth.
"President Bush had asked lawmakers to give the tax collectors $54 million to get the operation running."
Everyday we learn something else. Now he wants to give everyones personal information to a private organization who has not real accountability to anyone. These records will end up being sold...Or oops we misplaced a computer...
And then you have legalized thugs in private industry doing who knows what to people. All sanctioned by the USG. Don't we pay the government enough to do the job themselves.
there are some people who make mistakes when they fill out the forms, or make mistakes with transactions such as home sales, etc. I can understand that, and there shouldn't be draconian tactics used against them.
but the IRS knows who the structural cheaters are.
The world is now completely upside down. We need a RAT to stop the IRS from abusing citizens? Bush supports this privatization of IRS function? Someone pinch me, I'm tired of this nightmare.
At least we have one decent branch watching out for us.
I don't know about you, but I would much rather be hunted by a private collection agency than a SWAT team.
Good news. Looks like there's no new artery grown to the tumor. At least for today.
Crazy like a fox, maybe, but not for the reasons you suggest. His "crazy like a fox" routine involves the treasonous, globalist sell-out of this great nation.
It's time to get out the pitchforks and torches folks.
What is a structural cheater? If you cheat you go to jail and don't make any more income to cheat with. Isn't the IRS the real cheater? It has access to all of our banking, income and investment records. NOt only that, if you want to pay cash for something worth more than 10,000 dollars you can't. Who's cheating whom?
It is the IRS who is enforcing laws that only allow me to make limited contributions to my IRA, SEP, 401(k). It is the IRS enforcing laws that says I can only deduct charitable contributions to an approved list (approved by the IRS) of charities. I can't give a car to a needy family in my neighborhood and write it off - that contribution has to be filtered through some IRS approved organization. It is the IRS enforcing laws that prevent those same organiztions from having a political opinion.
Oh, everyone is so worried about the NSA. What about the IRS? They have the word WIRETAP tattooed on the foreheads in the form on access to all of your financial records.
How did it ever get to the point where the CENTRAL government takes 25% of everything we earn and the states only take 6%? What in the hell is that all about? National defense? No. Entitlement programs adminstered by a phantom tyrant 1,000 miles away from YOUR state.
Mine's been by the front door for years.
Amen, brother. ...I'm sick of all these guys. They will never willingly agree to let the IRS go. They derive too much power from it, and can financially opress and break someone at any time or whim.
