"What are the demographics of the district?" "Population in 2000: 646,249; 62.5% urban; 37.5% rural

Median Household Income: $30,612; 13.6% are below the poverty line

Occupation: 30.5% blue collar; 51.4% white collar; 18.1% gray collar; 15.3% military veterans

Race/Ethnic Origin: 95.0% White, 3.3% Black, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Amer. Indian, 0.0% Hawaiian, 0.7% Two+ races, 0.1% Other, 0.6% Hispanic origin

Ancestry: 17.3% German, 9.8% Irish, 9.2% Italian " Source: Michael Barone, Almanac of American Politics 2006 The district gave President Bush between 48%-49% in 2004, and it will probably give Lynn Swann at least 52% this November, so it is not a safe Democrat seat by any stretch. I think Diana Irey has a genuine chance of pulling off the upset againt the treasonous Murtha.

"what about mine safety?...there have been several mining incidents in the past few years...my preferred solution is more strip mining -- it strikes me as a far safer way to mine coal....the landscape can be repaired"

I agree 100%. Diana Irey should use the issue against Murtha, since Democrats are responsible for the dangerous conditions imposed upon miners due to the prohibition on strip mining. I also think that the issue could be used against Robert Byrd in WV.

What's really frightening is AuH2O has that stuff memorized and uses it to impress chicks at local bars!

Do you have any idea what time the live thread will start up?

It'll probably go up (on the existing hot link) about fifteen minutes prior to starting time.

I don't think that would work very well. : )

My wife absolutely hates it when she sees I'm reading one of my copies of the Almanac (I have the 1994, 1996, 2002, 2004 and 2006 versions), and asks "haven't you finished that book yet?" I explain that it's not exactly the kind of book that you start on page 1 and read all the way to the end, but she says that's even worse, since I will never finish it (and she's right, since it's the equivalent of a dictionary, an encyclopedia or some similar reference book).

Pardone me, but, what's a hot link?

I know it's wikipedia, but here's their def:

Grey Collar refers to the balance of employed persons not classified as white or blue collar. Although grey collar is sometimes used to describe those who work beyond the age of retirement, its most widely accepted meaning refers to occupations that incorporate some of the elements of both Blue and White collar, or are completely different from both categories.

I have to wonder why the website does not feature more pictures of her.

She is an attractive woman and while that shouldn't matter we all know it does.

Pictures of a young attractive woman would contrast sharply with pictures of the old bitter wretched man she is running against.

From Barone's Almanac:

"Occupation. Refers to type of job within industry. The figure is the % of employed persons 16 years and older in these occupations. White collar refers to management, professional, sales and administrative occupations. Blue collar refers to construction, production and transportation occupations. Gray collar refers to the balance of employed persons not classified as white or blue collar, such as farming, fishing and forestry or health care, protective service, food prep and personal care occupations."
