Hillary Clinton is wasting no time turning Bush administration cuts in counterterrorism funding for New York City to her political advantage - invoking the budget slashing to her supporters as another reason they should contribute to her Senate reelection campaign.
"When the Department of Homeland Security cut funding to New York's Homeland Security Grant program this week, they included a so-called 'explanation' that said the city had no national monuments and icons," Clinton explains, in an email sent to prospective contributors on Friday.
Exhorting her backers to send the DHS postcards of New York icons like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building - the former first lady complains: "Maybe Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and his Department don't think those are icons - but we know better!"
At the end of her email, which was signed by Mrs. Clinton's top aide Ann Lewis, a handy button reads, "Make a Contribution."
The link leads to a form where outraged Hillary backers can contribute anywhere between $25 and $2,100 to Mrs. Clinton's campaign.
The former first lady already has nearly $20 million more in her campaign coffers than her nearest GOP challenger. Any campaign cash she doesn't spend this year can be used to bankroll a presidential run in 2008.
Yes, giving money to Hillary will ensure that the Congressional budget will include an earmark for NYC for additional funds to pay overtime for their cops, among other things...
Sure...
Politicians have no low they can't undershoot. Hillary is just among the worst.
I somehow doubt that is an exact quote from Chertoff...
Ann Lewis is the sister of Barney "rump rider" Frank.
Mommy what does "Rump Rider" mean?
She should renounce her lame desire for $20 mil to study "the effects of videos on children" and use that money for NY.
It seems that Hillary and others missed the memo. DHS money was intended to build infrastructure, buy and upgrade equipment required for the security of the nation and the city. It was not intended to be a continuous stream of money. If the city did not use the money wisely then it is not DHS's fault.
As horrible as Hilary is:
Can you explain to me why she even has this issue to campaign on?
Why are our tax dollars for security going to Nebraska and Kansas?
Why was the Statue of Liberty overlooked?
I am not exactly feeling that confident in the competnence of our government to look at security as a place to put interests of pork aside and worry about what really needs to be done.
She's can campaign on any issue she wants. If people are stupid enough to send her money, that's really not her problem.
Why are our tax dollars for security going to Nebraska and Kansas?
Congress decided to use a formula for distributing grants to the States. In inordinate amount of money goes to States with a very low threat level. This isn't a bad thing, since the entire country is a target, but Congress did this insanely from the outset when the money should've been focused on hardening priority targets against attacks. Nobody has accused Congress of having any common sense, and nobody ever shall.
Why was the Statue of Liberty overlooked?
There are no homeless people currently living in the monument. Until you stuff it to the rafters with the poor, the tired, and the huddled masses, it isn't considered much of a target. No wait... If true, this is a legitimate oversight. Now, has New York requested grants specifically to harden the Statue against attack? Is the Statue on State property or Federal property?
Or how unwisely some of the money was being spent....
Evidently, the heinous creature and her cohorts on the left want it both ways.
