This fall 4,852 freshmen are expected to enroll at UCLA, but only 96, or 2%, are African American the lowest figure in decades and a growing concern at the Westwood campus.
For several years, students, professors and administrators at UCLA have watched with discouragement as the numbers of black students declined. But the new figures, released this week, have shocked many on campus and prompted school leaders to declare the situation a crisis.
UCLA which boasts such storied black alumni as Jackie Robinson, Tom Bradley and Ralph Bunche, and is in a county that is 9.8% African American now has a lower percentage of black freshmen than either crosstown rival USC or UC Berkeley, the school often considered its top competitor within the UC system.
The 96 figure down by 20 students from last year is the lowest for incoming African American freshmen since at least 1973. ...

"Clearly, we're going to have to meet this crisis by redoubling our efforts, which have not yielded the results we'd like to see," said Chancellor Albert Carnesale, who met Friday with a delegation of undergraduates upset about the situation.
In a telephone interview before the meeting, Carnesale described the preliminary numbers for black freshmen as "a great disappointment" and said that UCLA has been trying for years to boost those levels, within the limits allowed by law.
He and other officials at UCLA and elsewhere said the problem of attracting, admitting and enrolling qualified black students is found at competitive universities across the country and that its causes are complex. In California, the problem is rooted partly in the restrictions placed on the state's public colleges and institutions by Proposition 209, the 1996 voter initiative that banned consideration of race and gender in admissions and hiring.

In LA, in the UC system where illegals get better rates than US citizens from other states, you think there are few to no illegals or children of illegals?
I axtd 'bout dat an noone seemd to know ifn it was riight!
Why was the headline not about Gays? Because they did get the correct proportion admitted?
No, not that at all, I am only referring to the 96 blacks, I doubt any of them are included in the substantial number of illegals also benefitting from in state tuition rates at this or other institutions. We know the number are in the thousands in that case.
Though many students come from LA county, UCLA is not a county school. As long as Howard University and the many other separate but equal schools continue to enroll nearly 100 percent black students, that will reduce the number available to join us in the general population. A minority friend of mine back in 1970 failed to do well enough in HS and on the SAT for admission to UCLA. He aced the science and math courses he took at Mt. SAC and I've no doubt he was able to later transfer to the four-year school.
That's surprising. I thought it might be all of them.

Not to mention the fact that asians are entering UCLA at a rate way ABOVE their proportions in California society.
That's gotta stop, obviously.
I have a friend whose daughter was educated during her elementary/middle school years at a private Christian school. When she transferred to the public high school, you wouldn't believe the bs she got from the other black kids for having white friends and doing well. Some of these idiots were from middle class families, one of whom was the daughter of a public school music teacher with a dad who was a cop.
That girl should have known better. Why she didn't, I'm not sure.
UCLA is located in a rather affluent area of Los Angeles. Westwood. Boarding Brentwood and Beverly hills. I know alot of locals that go there....
We can save everyone alot of trouble by awarding a BA degree to all blacks when they reach the age of 22.
Have you walked in a Doctor's office and asked yourself wheter the Doc earned his Diploma outright and by merit or it was a "affirmative action" thing?
Especially when is a life/death issue!
This is how I help a brother UP, as opposed to simply a goverment hand OUT (the latter being and a corrupt and morally compromised one, thank's our limosine lefties who avoid discussing above topics within the media, without a white racist angle attached to it)
And judging by the 100% surrender of our black youths to hip-hop culture, expect that number to decline in the coming years.
THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM
all other reasons are pathetic excuses. Black fathers have got to step up!!!!
Asian, Indian, ME fathers do.
How many whites are playing in the NBA? Not many you say? TFB. If the white boys aren't qualified, they don't get in. And the admission criteria are MUCH tougher to get into the NBA than into UCLA.
This article leaves almost hidden the reality that black students have not been displaced at UCLA by racist whites. White student and black student numbers have decreased significantly--while Asian students have risen dramatically in the past 20 years.
The LATimes leaves the reader assuming blacks are suffering decreased enrollment due to racism (and we all know what that means).
