Snow: Flow of illegals not an 'invasion'
Spokesman says Article 4 of Constitution doesn't apply to border issue
Saying Mexico is "not the enemy," presidential press secretary Tony Snow today rejected the characterization of the constant flow of illegal aliens over the U.S. border as an "invasion."
At today's White House press briefing, WND asked the spokesman: "Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution says, 'The United States shall guarantee to every state in the Union a republican form of government and shall protect each of them from foreign invasion.' My question is, does the president believe this foreign invasion means only armed invasion, or doesn't this also mean the invasion of millions of illegal immigrants?"
Responded Snow: "I think what you are doing is you're attaching a martial connotation to something that does not have martial consequences.
"What the president has said if you were talking about an invasion, he's made it clear that Mexico is not the enemy."
WND also asked Snow about a lawsuit by war veteran Sgt. Peter Damon, who lost both of his arms in Iraq. Damon has sued Michael Moore for using clips without his permission in "Fahrenheit 9/11" to give the false impression that he opposed the war.
"I didn't lose my arms over there to come back and be used as ammunition against my commander in chief," Damon was quoted as saying.
"If he is asked," queried WND, "will this commander in chief be willing to testify in court on behalf of this double amputee sergeant?"
Snow called it a "hypothetical question"
"Please don't put me in the position of trying to answer to a lawsuit between somebody who served his country and Michael Moore," Snow said. "We'll let them deal with it."
Hi Smartass. I haven't been reading the threads thoroughly like the rest of you, so am not up on what all has been said.
Having said that, we all knew the minute Tony took this job he would be a spokesman for the President! Even if he did disagree, he couldn't speak out about it.
So why is everyone mad at Tony for doing the job he was hired to do? The President, whom we've supported, makes the decisions, which we don't like!
I just got a chance to read this thread and am amazed at the people who don't see the border issues as a serious problem for this country. Then I went to home pages for those with their heads deepest in the sand and was not surprised to see Georgia, and Pennsylvania as some of those poster's state flags. OK, now I am supposed to believe someone in GA or PA knows more about the border issues than I do- I am only 7 miles from the border. ROFLMAO.
"You would think" ....... "would" being your key word (voice)?
Commenting in WHAT way?
Is it an invasion or isn't it?
See # 316.
See # 302.
Snow's just another con man on this.
bump
7 miles! No wonder, Tammy! But, heh heh, they're only passing through on their way up here to L.A., the Mecca of all Meccas for los mexicanos.
Viva El Lay!
Right
****
One more time.
We the people, instead of being to blame, are truly the court of last resort and the only hope for resolving the illegal INVASION.
Yep .......
Rounding up people that look and talk differently is not far out? Calling for warrantless searches of people and private property to determine their citizenship status is not a little far out? Taking private property for a federally subsidized wall is not a little far out?
I have posed this question many times. What exactly makes a citizen? Some wish to remove birthright citizenship. Should every human being in the USA, territories, and possessions be compelled to study for and apply for citizenship? What happens if someone sits out an election? In Germany, voting is compulsory today. And we built that government. So some say that we should spill our blood and spend our treasure to bring "democracy" to ragheadland, and ignore the problems in Mexico. The muzzies will never be at peace with their neighbors or the USA. Mexico was pacified when we took their northern territories. What good is diplomacy without a potential for rewards, and punitive measures? Mexico has received nothing but incentive and reward from the US for over a hundred years. Time for Congress to get a spine and show them the stick. But alas, they will bicker and squabble and continue to divide Americans. I love this country and it is gutwrenching to see Americans divided over the actions of a bad neighbor.
Just maybe, because in the very back of out minds some of us hoped Tony's wisdom or perspective would change George on this issue. Maybe we hoped Tony would wise up G.W. on this.
It was certainly a mistake if we hoped so.
I'm from PA and I'm with you on this......... I think.
"I have posed this question many times. What exactly makes a citizen?"
And I'm quite sure it's been answered most of the time.
How about if your parents, or at least one of them is a LEGAL US citizen.
He got the job because he felt the same way.
Really? I don't doubt you, but I just never thought Tony could/may agree to this Senate/Bush plan and this endless pandering.
I guess I gave him too much credit long ago.
I will buy into that premise. However, we must then allow corruption of blood. If that parent is convicted of a felony, and loses their citizenship (technically becoming a US national) then the whole family loses citizenship. Good thing our US (and Texas) constitution forbid allowance of the corruption of blood.
And, as some FReepers and Savage predicted, Iraq is turning against us, specifically our Marines.
"I'm sorry but IMO your explanation is akin to blaming ourselves for every robbery or murder because we haven't hired more cops."
Its akin to seeing leaks in a dam and not doing anything meaningful about it until it bursts the way I see it.
Now we are in damage control and crisis mode, not the best time to expect sound decisions to be made by politicians thats for sure. The opportunity to fix it properly long gone. Im in San Diego, Im nearly forty now.
I have watched the problem worsen since I was a little kid. As a child I wondered why there was a checkpoint 50 miles north of the border near Camp Pendleton. Why werent they stopped at the border. This was in the seventies.
Mexico will never help us. Ever. It was up to us. We failed. Now we are dealing with the decisions made by people when I wasnt even old enough to vote.
Just like our gas situation today is dictated by decisions made decades ago.
It's called selling one's soul for employment, and/or blind obedience. As you know, I refused to do that myself. Yes, we must follow our employer's policies and wishes, as long as they're legal. However, I could never take a job, where I couldn't think, or be my own self, or as a condition of employment...commit an illegal act. Tony Snow's statement went way deeper when he compared illegals immigrants to trivial traffic fines. When a person like Snow, comes off with a dumb statement like that, he then tosses the forging of ID's, birth certificates, SS numbers, drivers licenses, the rule of law, right out the window. We can't stop him or anybody for what they say, but we can disagree and shake our heads with disgust! Tony is new at the job, so we may overlook mistakes, or ill advised statements. He could have phrased the answer differently, hence, he got flamed for it.
"The President, whom we've supported, makes the decisions, which we don't like!""
We're at war, and I supported and agreed with President Bush on many issues, but not with his illegal immigration policies. I believe those policies terribly flawed, will do long term damage to our country. Moreover, he's not listening to what the vast majority of Americans want.
In the big scheme of things I don't disagree with anything you said in your last post to me. But I was previously speaking about the issue at the most basic level. The individual, personal decision to illegally jump the border.
