Snow: Flow of illegals not an 'invasion'

Spokesman says Article 4 of Constitution doesn't apply to border issue

Saying Mexico is "not the enemy," presidential press secretary Tony Snow today rejected the characterization of the constant flow of illegal aliens over the U.S. border as an "invasion."

At today's White House press briefing, WND asked the spokesman: "Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution says, 'The United States shall guarantee to every state in the Union a republican form of government and shall protect each of them from foreign invasion.' My question is, does the president believe this foreign invasion means only armed invasion, or doesn't this also mean the invasion of millions of illegal immigrants?"

Responded Snow: "I think what you are doing is you're attaching a martial connotation to something that does not have martial consequences. …

"What the president has said – if you were talking about an invasion, he's made it clear that Mexico is not the enemy."

WND also asked Snow about a lawsuit by war veteran Sgt. Peter Damon, who lost both of his arms in Iraq. Damon has sued Michael Moore for using clips without his permission in "Fahrenheit 9/11" to give the false impression that he opposed the war.

"I didn't lose my arms over there to come back and be used as ammunition against my commander in chief," Damon was quoted as saying.

"If he is asked," queried WND, "will this commander in chief be willing to testify in court on behalf of this double amputee sergeant?"

Snow called it a "hypothetical question"

"Please don't put me in the position of trying to answer to a lawsuit between somebody who served his country and Michael Moore," Snow said. "We'll let them deal with it."

to Mr. Snow:

Mr. Snow, in only one definition of "invasion" is there stipulation of foreign-national military incursion.

If you knew any Latin (or were honest) you would admit that "invade" means, at root, no more or less than "to go into".

If you knew (or were honest about) any recent history, you'd know that the invasion by Americans of territories held by the Spanish Empire (later becoming the independent republic of Texas) was not a coordinated military thrust, but a demographic displacement directly analogous to what Mexicans and others from south of our border are doing today.

If you knew (or were honest about) any ancient history, you would see that the current situation is in many ways directly analogous to that which cost the Roman Empire its western provinces and led directly to the dissolution of that Empire (officially finished in 476ad). That process led directly to the constant strife in Europe which lasted almost 1500 years.

You would also see some resemblance to the settlement policies of the later Byzantines in what are now known as the Balkans.

Do the Balkans as they now exist appeal to you as a model for the future of this republic, Mr. Snow?

Well, if it's not invasion, then it wouldn't be an invasion if a million Chinese came here fleeing their country, and a million Russians, and a million...

But apparently if one boy comes here from Cuba, that IS enough of an invasion to call out the military to repel.

If anyone thought that Snow being named Press Secretary was going to help us, you were wrong. Bush chose him to reach out to talk-radio listeners (that is, the conservative base) to try to convince us to shut up and go along with his plan.

Well you are entitled to your point of view. You can write your Congressmen. Let us know if you find even a single government official that agrees with you that we should declare war on Mexico. :-)

Why did you direct me to that empty post?

There was nothing there.

If Tony Snow is going to be an honest man, he should quit that job he just took.

Right now ("no invasion") he's JUST ANOTHER LOUSY CON ARTIST in Washington D.C. ........... just more of the problem......... and with that abysmal charming little sweetboy, empathetic, softie look.

Dubya didn't do Tony any favors by hiring him. He is required to carry the Administrations water on the illegal immigration issueat the expense of his own credibility

There is now NO CREDIBILITY.

He is not doing a good job of convincing us to go along with the amnesty bill. I do not think that Tony will be going back to talk radio anytime soon after his White House days are over, either. An awful lot of talk radio listeners will link him with amnesty for illegals and tune him out.

I had an argument with Snow here on FR on this topic before he got hired by the administration (though, to be fair to him, he may have known it was in the wind and known which side of his bread was about to be buttered).

At that time, he was already in the "this invasion is not an invasion; this amnesty is not an amnesty" camp.

How many of us are willing to leave our comfort zones and take some risks? We do not have the protections of the ability to peaceful assembly like illegals do.

We might actually have to face water canons, rubber bullets, nassy dogs, and clubs upside the head as happened to Caucasian demonstrators in the 50's.

I don't think anyone is uncomfortable enough with losing their nation to be to that point, or take that risk. Perhaps won't be uncomfortable enough until someone kicks down their front door.

I can see the future, when nationhood is a thing of the past, patriotism is a word that can land you in jail, and hasn't been taught in decades, and these rich elites, who have slowly taken over Mexico and the rest of S. America, find they have picked up a sticky tar baby, and a savvy enemy that threatens everything they have accumulated looms on the horizon to take it all.

They are going to instigate the draft against a much larger enemy to protect their interests. But this time the elite is up against a savvy enemy. When our Trade Zone raised boys are captured, they are not tortured, decapitated, just the opposite in fact.

When captured, the enemy will invite the Red Cross in to see the basketball courts, tv, game systems, clean sheets, great food, and first rate medical attention given to their captives.

And these boys, with no clue about patriotism or nationalism, and who are not stupid and are saying to themselves, it can't be any worse for me and my family personally to live under these guys than it is under the rich elites wanting me to save their bacon.

There was more than a few Lt's in Viet Nam shot in the back of the head. What kind of pressure is going to be put on the elites running the show to have the enemy tell the world that they will send little captive Billy home to his mom and family, he can return to college, marry his childhood sweet heart, if the elites promise not to put him back into battle.

Yeah, the elites Trade Zone idea seems like a real good idea, surely it can't be a tar baby. Surely it's best to kill nationhood except as a figure head and kill off the fire in the belly of patriotism in the individual. I heard the head of the TABC testify at the Ruby Ridge investigation that patriots are no longer needed. Most likely I will be long gone by then, but where ever I am I will be laughin like a drunk monkey.

We are not experiencing an invasion by a foreign country which is what the founders meant. It doesn't mean I am for illegal immigration though. I am in favor of a sea-tosea wall, stiff penalties for employers and no amnesty. But I'm not willing to twist words to support an agenda. The truth is the truth. Snow is exactly right.

I'm pretty sure that the Founders were aware of what the word "invasion" meant. You keep limiting that word to the military reference. I think some of the other meanings below (bold emphasis mine), which you seem so eager to ignore, are more on-point:

in·va·sion ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-vzhn) n.

The act of invading, especially the entrance of an armed force into a territory to conquer. A large-scale onset of something injurious or harmful, such as a disease.
An intrusion or encroachment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Middle English invasioun, from Old French invasion, from Late Latin invsi, invsin-, from invsus, past participle of invdere, to invade. See invade.]

Main Entry: in·va·sion
Pronunciation: in-'vA-zh&n
Function: noun
: the act of or an instance of invading

Main Entry: in·va·sion
Pronunciation: in-'vA-zh&n
Function: noun
: the act of invading: as a : the penetration of the body of a host by a microorganism b : the spread and multiplication of a pathogenic microorganism or of malignant cells in the body of a host

invasion

n 1: the act of invading; the act of an army that invades for conquest or plunder 2: any entry into an area not previously occupied; "an invasion of tourists"; "an invasion of locusts" [syn: encroachment, intrusion] 3: (pathology) the spread of pathogenic microorganisms or malignant cells to new sites in the body; "the tumor's invasion of surrounding structures"

You say you won't "twist words in support of an agenda", and yet proceed to do precisely that. May as well just cut to the chase here... what *better* word do you think should be applied here?

Here's the entire list of synonyms generated by Thesaurus.com (sorry about the duplicate entries, that's just the way that site churns it out). Perhaps you and Tony can decide what we're going to be calling this from now on.

To all... What's YOUR vote for the kinder, gentler word to be used in place of "invasion"? Please select one from the list above and use it (any form or tense) in a brief sentence. We'll tally the results later. :-)

I'll begin. My vote goes to TRESPASS. As in: "Explaining that the intruder was lawfully confronted, shot and killed while trespassing, the District Attorney's office announced that no charges would be filed against the homeowner."

Next?

"Sometimes I leave the front door open for the breeze. Since the door is not locked does that mean you are free to enter at will?"

Not if one of your relatives is inviting people in to do the dishes for some dinner creating the situation.

America created this problem. We can blame Mexicans all day long, but in the end WE did it with our dual messages. Oh dont come in, but play the jump the border game and you have a job and we wont throw you out.

I dont like it any more than anyone else. But WE caused this problem. Decades of next to non-existant border enforcement and toleration of with wink and nod to those who hire has come home to roost.

Obviously you've never heard him on this subject...

Seriously... we've always argued this with Tony, same position he's always had; We've exchanged links and planned on doing threads when he wasn't on the show to discuss each aspect of illegal immigration... that's when it got heated, Jim Rob warned us and admins banished some of the threads to the Smoky Backroom.

Go back and check the Tony Snow Show Threads... Or to a site to listen to the old shows re: immigration. You'll find plenty of freepers called him on it during the shows.

I would think a freeper would research before commenting in this way. There are many columns out there he wrote on it also... at the tips of your fingers.
