Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - June 2006

Posted on 06/01/2006 7:04:43 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Al-Qaeda's Long March to War
(Full Story)

In recent weeks, media reports from both Iraq and Afghanistan have suggested the appearance of a slow evolution of the Islamist insurgents' tactics in the direction of the battlefield deployment of larger mujahideen units that attack "harder" facilities.

These attacks are not replacing small-unit attacks, ambushes, kidnappings, assassinations and suicide bombings in either country, but rather seem to be initial and tentative forays toward another stage of fighting.

Christian Women Reportedly Gang-Raped

By Jeremy Reynalds
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service

BHOPAL, INDIA (ANS) -- Two Christian women, one of them seven months pregnant, were reportedly gang-raped in a village in India as a result of their refusal to leave the Christian faith.

The two women, 22 and 24, say they were gang-raped in Nadia, a village in Madhya Pradesh state's Khargon district.

According to Salem Voice Ministries (SVM), the woman along with Pastor Sarachand Chauhan, met Governor Dr.Balram Jhakar and presented their case. The governor asked the Director General of Police and Chief Secretary to send him information about the alleged assault. He also asked for a report on action taken by officials.

SVM reported that Chauhan said a medical examination has confirmed the rapes, but for additional evidence the samples are being DNA tested.

The younger woman said, SVM reported, that the men went into her house at about 10 p.m. when she was alone, her husband having gone to meet a relative. "I ran out of the house and took shelter in the house of my neighbors," SVM stated she said. She added that despite her neighbor’s attempts to pacify the gang, the men still dragged her out to an open field.

The two men then stripped and both raped her. According to SVM, the rest of the gang stood around watching as the woman cried for help. When her husband and his friend rushed to help her, SVM said the woman reported that some of the gang members beat them with bamboo and wooden sticks.

Both women said the gang rape was in retaliation for their families' refusal to leave the Christian faith, SVM reported. Earlier that day, they said, the same men, whom they recognized as from the village, beat the husband of the younger woman and forced him to drink alcohol, while demanding that he renounce Christianity.

Chauhan said, SVM reported, that the normal custom of drinking liquor tribal is disallowed amongst tribal Christians. The gang members reportedly forced the women to drink liquor in an attempt to “defile the religion.”

SVM reported that the older woman, who said she is seven months pregnant, said the men overpowered her before she could run away or hide. After chasing her father-in-law from the house and beating her mother-in- law, who was trying to stop them, they reportedly dragged her outside, threw her on to a cot in front of the house and tore off her clothes. Three men then took turns raping her.

After the incident, SVM reported the the women and their family members were reportedly kept under “house arrest” by the alleged perpetrators. They threatened more attacks and even death if the matter was reported to the police.

However, SVM reported, after two days the women managed to flee the village and reported the incidents to law enforcement. The police refused to register their cases, SVM reported, as the men involved are politically powerful and belong to the ruling party. However, the alleged assault was officially documented after other officials got involved.

SVM reported that Christian believers face persecution and death in many countries today, especially in India. In the last 100 years, SVM stated that more Christians have been martyred for their faith than in the past 1900 years combined.

SVM is an evangelistic, inter-denominational organization dedicated to preaching the Gospel to Muslims, Hindus and others in the third world, as well as helping persecuted Christians.

Jordan arrests Zarqawi's brother-in-law and an Al Jazeera journalist live!
counterterrorismblog.org ^ | June 8, 2006 | Olivier Guitta

Posted on 06/08/2006 1:50:47 PM PDT by Velveeta

In fact, a few hours ago, while an Al Jazeera journalist was interviewing Abu Kadama, Zarqawi's brother-in-law in Zarqa, Jordan, the broadcast was suddenly interrupted, most probably by Jordan. Because when the journalist came back on the air, he said that Abu Kadama had just been arrested by Jordanian services. Then a second sudden interruption occured, and when the Al Jazeera anchor appeared, he announced that his journalist colleague had also been arrested by Jordan. Keep in mind that Jordan's King Abdullah was one of Zarqawi's main targets. In light of recent foiled Al Qaeda attacks in Jordan, it seems reasonable to think that Abdullah wanted to show his resolve against Zarqawi's sympathizers.

From the link about the American who didn't want to be extradited, is this the same man? The name is the same

Thanks for looking MamaD but I think that is a different Syed Hashmi. The Syed in the article is 26 years old and has been in the UK on a (now expired) student visa since 2003.

"Md. man planned to bomb abortion clinic"
Baltimore Sun ^ | June 8, 2006 | Stephen Manning - AP

Posted on 06/08/2006 7:46:58 PM PDT by RDTF

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A man was arrested today and charged with making a bomb that he planned to use to attack an abortion clinic, a device that went off in the home of a friend while authorities were trying to disable it.

Robert F. Weiler Jr., 25, of Forestville, was arrested more than 140 miles away at a Garrett County rest stop on Interstate 68 about 12:30 a.m. after he called agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to surrender. He told authorities that he made the bomb and had a gun he planned to use in the attack, according to court documents.

The device, a pipe bomb filled with nails that was stored in a closet at the friend's home in Riverdale, exploded several hours later as a bomb technician tried to defuse it. No one was injured, but the house was set on fire."

Secretive, powerful Bilderberg group
meets near Ottawa

These guys, you've probably never even heard of, and if you believe the camera-toting followers who attend all their meetings, they control the world.

They're called the Bilderberg group.

They include European royalty, national leaders, political power-brokers, and heads of the world's biggest companies.

Those who follow the Bilderberg group say it got Europe to adopt a common currency, got Bill Clinton elected after he agreed to support NAFTA, and is spending this week deciding what to do about high oil prices and that pesky fundamentalist president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

ICE Agents Seize Cocaine Worth $4.3 Million Hidden In Tractor-trailer Cab
Second significant seizure in the area this week

MCALLEN, Texas — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents seized 153.6 kilograms of cocaine stashed inside the sleeper compartment of a semi truck cab.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on a tractor-trailer rig Tuesday on highway 281. Shortly after the stop, the driver granted consent for a search. The rig was taken to the Hidalgo Port of Entry, where Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers checked it using the Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS). CBP uses VACIS to identify concealed narcotics and illegal immigrants.

Results from the check indicated an abnormal area in the floor of the sleeper section of the cab, and a subsequent search revealed a compartment containing 140 bundles of cocaine with an estimated street value of $4.3 million. The cocaine and tractor-trailer were turned over McAllen ICE agents for further investigation.

ICE agents also seized more than 4,350 pounds of marijuana and more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine at a Falcon Dam residence on Monday. The drugs are valued at over $36 million.

“These are significant seizures,” said Alonzo Pena, special agent-in-charge for the ICE office in San Antonio. “They demonstrate ICE’s commitment to identify and close vulnerabilities in our nation’s borders. We will not stand by as criminal organizations attempt to poison the United States with illicit drugs.”

ICE encourages the reporting of suspicious criminal activity related to drugs or the smuggling of illegal aliens to call its toll-free hotline at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE. Investigators staff this hotline around the clock.

ICE Agents Seize Cocaine Worth $4.3 Million Hidden In Tractor-trailer Cab
Defendants alleged to have served in army unit that committed human rights violations

SALT LAKE CITY – Four former members of the Bosnian Serb military appeared in federal court here this morning to face visa fraud charges, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into allegations they failed to disclose their prior Bosnian Serb military service when they applied for immigration benefits, allowing them to relocate to the United States.

Yesterday, ICE agents arrested Milenko Stjepanovic, 55; Mirka Stjepanovic, 53; Ranko Nastic, 54; and Branko Ristic 46. All four defendants, who currently live in the Salt Lake City area, are citizens of the former Yugoslavia, now Bosnia-Herzegovina. Indictments unsealed this morning allege that they made materially false statements on their immigration benefit applications, failing to disclose that they had served in the Bosnian Serb military during the Bosnian War of 1992 to 1995.

Because of the atrocities committed by all sides during the Bosnian War, Bosnians who seek refuge in the United States are required to declare all military service, including service in the Bosnian Serb Army, on immigration forms.

While under oath, the defendants allegedly did not reveal their prior military service with the Army of the Republika Srpska, or the Vojska Republika Srpska (VRS). The VRS participated in human rights violations, including the Srebrenica massacre, which resulted in the capture and execution of thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys during 1995. The Srebrenica massacre has been classified as genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Individuals who have persecuted others are not admissible to the United States by law.

“We will not allow the United States to become a sanctuary for those using fraud and deception to qualify for refugee status,” said Joseph Romel, assistant special agent in charge for the ICE office of investigations in Utah. “These individuals willfully concealed their prior service in the military and this raises serious questions about their basic claims to eligibility.”

Acting U.S. Attorney for Utah Stephen J. Sorenson emphasized that the indictments returned by a Utah grand jury do not allege the defendants committed war crimes in Bosnia, but that they were members of the Vojska Republika Srpska, the Serbian military, and soldiers in the Zvornik Brigade, which played a role at Srebrenica. Sorenson said there have been some instances where VRS members admitted military service and, after careful review, were able to obtain status in the United States. When the military service is not disclosed, however, the review is not conducted.

“The failure of these defendants to list their military service on refugee applications and subsequent applications here in Utah to obtain permanent residency precluded proper and meaningful screenings of their cases,” Sorenson said. “We believe the immigration status each of these defendants presently enjoys was obtained by fraud.”

Visa fraud carries a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The defendants are scheduled to stand trial in August. A hearing for Milenko Stjepanovic is scheduled for June 12 at 9:15 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Nuffer.

BRAVE NEW SCHOOLS
'Islamic indoctrination' taken to Supreme Court
Asked to review case of class that had students 'become Muslims'

Posted: June 9, 2006
1:00 a.m. Eastern

© 2006 WorldNetDaily.com

A public-interest legal group is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review a decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals allowing a California public school to engage in a three-week intensive course for 7th graders on how to "become Muslims."

A California federal trial court and the 9th Circuit, widely considered the nation's most liberal appeals court, determined the class did not violate the Constitution.

As WND reported, the lawsuit was filed by the Thomas More Law Center against the Byron Union School District and various school officials to stop the "Islam simulation" materials and methods used in the Excelsior School in Byron, Calif.

The 2001 course had students take Islamic names and wear identification tags that displayed their new Islamic name and the Muslim star and crescent moon. They also were handed materials that instructed them to "Remember Allah always so that you may prosper"; complete the Islamic five pillars of faith, including fasting; and memorize and recite the "Bismillah," or "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate," which students also wrote on banners hung on the classroom walls.

Students also played "jihad games" during the course, which was part of the school's world history and geography program.

Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center, said the "case cries out double standard."

"The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is the same court that held our Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because it contained the phrase 'under God,' and yet they allow a three-week intensive course on how to become Muslims, including class memorization of Islamic prayers and participation in Islamic religious rituals," Thompson said.

Edward L. White III, the Law Center's trial counsel handling the case, argued that although a public school may teach about religion, the school district "went far beyond an explanation of the historical or literary significance of Islam and placed these seventh graders into the position of becoming trainees in that religion."

"These young children were indoctrinated in Islam, which the Constitution forbids," White said.

The Supreme Court will decide within the next few months whether to review the case.

The Law Center argues the panel did not address the plaintiff's claims that their free exercise and parental rights had been violated.

White says parents were never told about the Islamic program and didn't know they had the option to remove their children from such an activity.

One of the parents found out by accident, looking through her son's schoolbag after the program had finished.

In December 2003, the San Francisco court determined the school district had not violated the Constitution.

In her 22-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton determined Excelsior was not indoctrinating students about Islam when it required them to adopt Muslim names and pray to Allah, but rather was just teaching them about the Muslim religion.

But White insists a line was crossed, placing the students in the "position of being trainees in Islam, which is impermissible in a public school."

When WorldNetDaily first reported the story in January 2002 – shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks committed by 19 Islamist terrorists – major controversy ensued nationwide.

The course was part of a curriculum taught to seventh-graders all over the state, included in the state's curriculum standards required by the state board of education. Although the standards outline what subjects should be taught and included in state assessment tests, they didn't mandate how they're to be taught.

At the end of the three-week course, Excelsior teacher Brooke Carlin presented a final test requiring students to critique Muslim culture.

The Islam simulations at Excelsior are outlined in the state-adopted textbook "Across the Centuries," published by Houghton Mifflin, which prompts students to imagine they are Islamic soldiers and Muslims on a Mecca pilgrimage.

The lawsuit also alleges students were encouraged to use such phrases in their speech as "Allahu Akbar," which is Arabic for "God is greatest," and were required to fast during lunch period to simulate fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Nevertheless, Judge Hamilton ruled the program was devoid of "any devotional or religious intent" and was, therefore, educational, not religious in nature.
