In recent weeks, media reports from both Iraq and Afghanistan have suggested the appearance of a slow evolution of the Islamist insurgents' tactics in the direction of the battlefield deployment of larger mujahideen units that attack "harder" facilities.

These attacks are not replacing small-unit attacks, ambushes, kidnappings, assassinations and suicide bombings in either country, but rather seem to be initial and tentative forays toward another stage of fighting.

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 06.22.06 1130 EDT: One of our ANN News-Spies has alerted us to a stolen aircraft in New Smyrna Beach, FL.

A Christen Eagle aerobatic biplane, N54CE (photos above and below) was stolen from a T-Hangar at the New Smyrna Beach Municipal airport (EVB) sometime between Monday evening after 9:00 pm, and Wednesday morning at 11:45 am. According to Rhonda Walker, Assistant Public Works Director for the city, there were no signs of forced entry and nothing else in the hangar was disturbed.

Pilots who have their planes hangared at EVB are advised to check that your plane is in your hangar, and to make sure the hangar doors are secure.

If anyone has any information on the theft, they are urged to contact Ms. Walker, orthe New Smyrna Beach Police Department, available through the FMI links below.

Airport incident investigation continues (Australia)

Police are continuing investigations into reports of a bang and a flash of light near Melbourne Airport.

A commercial pilot contacted the airport control tower about 4:30pm AEST yesterday, saying he saw a flash of light and a large puff of smoke.

Several people confirmed hearing a bang and seeing a speed camera-like flash.

One person took a photo showing a plume of smoke near the Bulla Cemetery.

Police, the CFA and the Melbourne Airport Authority found no evidence of anything during investigations yesterday.

Authorities charge two men after series of arrests in ongoing international anti-terrorism operation
The Associated Press, June 26, 2006

LONDON


Authorities have charged two men under Britain's Terrorism Act after a series of arrests that were part of an international anti-terror operation, West Yorkshire police said Monday.

A 21-year-old man from Bradford was accused of conspiracy to murder and plotting to cause public nuisance by using poison or explosives.

A second man, who is 28 years old, was charged under the Terrorism Act in a separate investigation. The second man was from southeast London and was accused under Section 57 of the Terrorism Act, which deals with the possession of articles that might be of use to terrorists, such as computer documents.

They are due to appear at Bow Street Magistrates Court in London on Tuesday.

Two other men arrested during the sweep last week were released without charge.

Southern California Port reopened after terror threat

The closure at the Port of Hueneme in Ventura County came just before noon after a dockworker discovered a threat written in the cargo hold of a ship carrying bananas from Guatemala, said Will Berg, the port's marketing director.

There was some discrepancy in the exact phrasing of the message.

Berg said it read: "This nitro is for you Mr. George W. Bush and your Jewish cronies."

Federal authorities said it read: "Nitro + glycerin my gift for G. W. Bush and his Jewish gang."

The message, scrawled in marker on a metal pillar within the ship, was being investigated by federal authorities, including the FBI and Secret Service, as well as local officials.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said agents were at the scene. No nitroglycerine or other explosives were found during a thorough search by bomb personnel, she said.

Divers were called in to inspect surrounding waters. About 20 people were evacuated from the 30,000-ton refrigerated vessel, identified as the Wild Lotus, which arrived from the Port of Quetzal in Guatemala on Sunday evening, officials said. Workers already outside the port were kept out during the closure, though anyone inside was allowed to remain.

The port was reopened around 3:30 p.m., and workers resumed unloading two other ships while the investigation continued, police Cmdr. Jerry Beck said.

The 135-acre (55-hectare) port, located northwest of Los Angeles, consists of two terminals. It is the only deep-ocean port between Los Angeles and San Francisco, though it handles far less cargo than the Los Angeles-Long Beach complex, America's largest harbor.
