Changes in Orange (County, California) bring exodus

ORANGE – The Hills left East Vine Avenue two weeks ago. The Wigginses plan to leave in a month or so. And just last week, the Hansons put up a for-sale sign.

In a few months, most of Carol Fulton's longtime neighbors will be gone. And in a flash, summer barbecues, Fourth of July parades and baseball games at the East Vine cul-de-sac will become distant memories.

Fulton sits on her front porch, pensive and surveying the neighborhood. It has changed drastically, she says.

The familiar smells and sounds of backyard barbecues are replaced by mariachi music and the honking horn of a shaved-ice cart. Fulton sees unfamiliar cars and people streaming onto the street.

Overcrowding caused by boarding homes - more than two leases on the same property - is an issue that city officials and residents have grappled with for years.

"This used to be a fun neighborhood," says Fulton, 56. "Kids stayed outside until 10 or 11 p.m. I figured we'd live here until we died. We never in 100,000 years thought it would change."

On most days, Fulton caps off the night at 10 with a cigarette in her garage. But these nights, she does it with the door closed.

We were always outside. In the summertime, I was a free spirit," she says. "Not anymore. We don't go outside anymore."

Fulton has to decide if she, like her friends, is going to go.

Orange had deep roots, a city with generations of families where grandparents and parents settled and their children held onto the threads of their childhood.

The neighborhood transformation was subtle at first.

Tell them it is too hot and dangerous for them to move to Texas, so don't move to Texas.

"Get out when you can," says her friend. "I'm moving to an American neighborhood."

Si.

This is how it started in Detroit about 1960; everybody said "don't worry, things will quiet down". They never did. Today, my old hometown is a burned out shell.

First came the noise, then, crime. You could call the police but they would not do anything about it except help you fill out papers for your insurance company.

The cops were justly afraid of getting sued or winding up on the six o'clock news as a "racist".

Nothing much changes. All these folks can do is to move to Montana. Soon we'll all be headed that way.

Rattlesnake, tarantulas, AND alligators.

It's too dangerous to move here.

Refugees in our own country. Lovely.

I won't even ask about the weather and job prospects up there.

Cheer up, our neighborhood has three Pakistani families, one from turkey and one from India. Most will not discuss their religious beliefs......duh. When our neighbors have visitors the visitors' children tell us that they are here in America and it doesn't matter if someone tells them they have overstayed their visas they are NOT leaving. They all have the play-book, it's legal Americans who are out of the loop.

You're just scared because Californians can take the money they get for their little bungalow in Orange County and buy three of your houses in Texas. ;)

Gee lady, I'm sorry for ya, move to Oregon. (not Texas)
If you don't go soon, your property value will be down to $4000 and a six pack of beer. Mexican beer.

Yup. It's too hot and too many hurricanes over here in Alabama, they'd better move to Nuw Yark.

California made the mess they're in, and they're stuck with it. These people should move, simply because the neighborhood will not stop deteriorating. Fact of life.

There's a bumper sticker around here: "Welcome to Texas, now GO HOME!"

"Until then, when she has her evening smoke, she'll keep her garage door closed."

Poor gal. She is a prisoner in her own home. She hasn't been threatened yet. When she is, she too will leave. What Bush is doing to the blue collar Americans is nothing short of a tragedy.

They'd be welcomed in Montana. My experience with folks from that state is that they tend to take a very dim view of that kinda thing, peeping through other people's windows and urinating on other people's lawns, up there :)

Yeah, of course you're right. And you know why we are in this mess? BECASUE OUR TWO MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB.

We must begin looking, in a serious way, to a third party. I like the Constitution Party. So, you say they can't win? Well, neither can we under these two parties.

"California made the mess they're in, and they're stuck with it"

Might it be....

President Bush has been promoting illegal immigration for 5 years.

California is on the Mexico border.

This is the most sinsiter result of those who have hired illegals, and why amnesty must be opposed at all and any cost. Anyone who is for the BS in the senate have no idea the agnoy people go though when their neighborhood crumbles.
