Global Warming Protestors Call For Resignation of Hurricane Center Director and NOAA Administrator

SILVER SPRING, MD – Hundreds of concerned citizens and leaders from across the nation will join Hurricane Katrina survivors Wednesday to call for the resignation of the heads of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the NOAA Headquarters just outside of Washington, D.C. During an 11 a.m. demonstration, advocates will demand that NOAA stop covering up the growing scientific link between severe hurricanes and global warming while insisting on real solutions to the problem of global warming.

The protest comes at the start of the 2006 Hurricane season, which officials at the NHC predict will be “a hectic, above-normal tropical storm season.” Speeches begin at 11 a.m. EDT and protestors will carry dramatic props and photographs of Hurricane Katrina. A 37-hour demonstration will follow, lasting until midnight on June 1st, with picketing during the day and a candlelight vigil by night.

After a record four major hurricanes hit Florida in 2004, the 2005 hurricane season was even more devastating. Of the six most powerful hurricanes ever to hit America in the past 150 years, three occurred within 52 days in 2005. Yet, despite a flurry of peer-reviewed scientific studies linking planetary warming to storms like Katrina, leaders at NOAA and the NHC continue to claim that the recent hurricane devastation is part of a "natural cycle."

WHEN: 11 A.M. EDT, Wednesday, May 31st thru midnight on Thursday, June 1st

WHO: The U.S. Climate Emergency Council, Katrina survivors and concerned citizens from across the nation

WHAT: Press conference and speeches at 11 a.m. followed by a 37-hour protest and vigil to condemn government the cover up of science linking hurricanes and global warming

WHERE: NOAA Headquarters, 1325 East/West Highway, Silver Spring, MD

"We can probably get thousands (instead of just hundreds)just here on FR to demand that Kerry release his War records--would this be a big story too?"

Why don't we try it? (not to hijack a thread, or anything...)

"We're in a drought here in Texas, FIRE THE CHANNEL 4 WEATHERMAN, IT'S ALL HIS FAULT!!!! "

You should be ashamed for blaming the drought on Channel 4 Meteorologist Evan Andrews.

Everyone knows it's George Bush's fault.

This is just another case of Republicans rejecting science to advance the agenda of big oil companies. I marvel at the lies that you m(*&w$F(*&)ing Republicans will tell to protect your fueher and his cronies at Halliburton.

The Communists and Marxists are getting more bold. ...just a bunch of Pagans who want to sacrifice our economy instead of maidens as they did a thousand years ago!

It is one of the first times that I have seen such a vicious attack on our highly competent, honest scientists actually doing the job the American taxpayers have asked them to do. NOAA should be commended for the excellent job they have been doing for many years! Such unjustified attacks should not go unanswered because we will just see more and more. Criminals all!

elli1 posted: "Energy Solutions - Scroll down to the fourth letter to the editor." From this letter... Finally, nuclear power is a disaster waiting to happen. There is a reason that no nuclear reactors have been built since the 1970s--Three Mile Island. Need I say more? Nuclear power is opposite to the direction in which we should be headed.

The obvious answer is YES! You do need to say more - Three Mile Island [1979] was the worst public nuclear reactor in the US AND NOBODY DIED and there appears to be after 25+ years the worst study that I can find is an increase in Lung and Blood cancers downwind in the 10 year period following the incident. Given the lack of follow up to this study, I'd be inclined to believe that others may have found problems with the study.

This person probably wants the same thing as the "Human Extinction" movement. I wonder what energy source(s) that Green Peace likes. I'm sure that they would say solar and wind but it is well known that these are limited and it would take a much reduced population for this to suffice.

Sorry I meant to ID this letter author as one of the coordinators of this protest movement and who self-identifies herself as Green Peace, Anne Havemann!

This is nuts. Most of the papers they cite aren't even written by hurricane experts. Sea temperature is only one of several factors governing the intensity of a storm and it's no the dominant one. The hurricane experts ar ethe4 NOAA and National Hurricane Center are the ones that really know what they are talking about.

If we didn't have Global Warming and if we didn't have Bush, who or what would the leftists be complaining about?

Is this stated "fact" true?:

"Of the six most powerful hurricanes ever to hit America in the past 150 years, three occurred within 52 days in 2005..."

By what measurement? Facts are slippery because the speaker can select the criteria.

'Powerful hurricanes' are frequently measured by how low their lowest measured air pressure was in the time span that the storm exists. This misleads because it may not and usually isn't the measurement at landfall. Katrina had dropped to a 2-3 Force at landfall.

'Expensive' measures damage costs which tilts towards modern hurricanes as there is greater populations closer to the coasts than in earlier years and there is more statistical reporting than earlier. If there is a repeat of some of the older hurricanes like the 'Chesapeake Bay Hurricane of 1933', the costs would be much greater now than then.

'Deadly' tilts towards earlier hurricanes where predictive weather reporting was less or missing. The Galveston Hurricane of 1901 killed thousands whereas current deaths generally measure less than contemporary tornado deaths.

So the answer is maybe yes, maybe no. No argument that we have more hurricane danger than we had in the last decades of the 20th Century but given that this is a cycle predicted in history, these doofuses waving 'Global Warming' signs do little to convince me.

Stupid thinking, which includes their simplistic global warming theology, will ask for the resignations of the Hurricane Center Director and NOAA Administrator. My question is do these nit wits expect that hurricanes will cease with these resignations?

I keep wondering when the public will realize that this is reminiscent of the old soviet union, where scientific opinion was subject to political pressure.

Along the history revision, designer offspring.

I wonder if they could be persuaded by an appeal to reason - the hot air that they are producing combined with the 'Butterfly effect / Chaos Theory' could also be leading to hurricanes. After all, anything is possible - right? Isn't that what they are saying about 'Global Warming', it doesn't matter if it is natural, since it is POSSIBLE that we are contributing to the warming, we must do everything to lessen that possibility.

They may be also be affected by a lot of wishful thinking; hoping that by human effort the climate can be massaged to a softer fuzzier impact. This is a theology that has gone on through the ages. Man has thought that by sacrificing the virgin he could stop the solar eclipse. It is a thinking that creates demagogs that are little more than Chicken Little.
