Dear Tony,
First let me say: I am so glad you were born! Yours is a birthday truly worth celebrating. I think you've led an amazing life and you are now doing a job you were absolutely meant to do, at a critical moment in history.
I want to take this opportunity to touch the "third rail" of the moment. It's the I word... immigration. I cannot thank you enough for your articulate and highly persuasive presentation of the immigration issue in recent interviews. I especially liked your (too short) interview on Michael Medved's radio show. I thought you were a perfect gentleman on Rush's show, even though you caught him flat-footed on several important points -- like the misdemeanor detail. Oh, that was rich!
I want you and the President to know that I am appalled and embarrassed by some self described "conservatives" rhetoric, childish tantrums, conspiracy theorizing, myth-making, "scare propaganda" like the Heritage numbers, and outright deception. It is not a good look, and it is not productive. It is also off-putting to people like me, because those very loud folks are not very tolerant and immediately start calling me un-American, stupid, weak, etc. because I support the president's call for a comprehensive plan.
I want you to know that we have been polled in detail by the RNC twice in the past 2 weeks, on the sole subject of immigration. In every case, our 2-adult household responded with the majority as Matthew Dowd's published results indicate. (We live in Alabama btw.)
So please keep up the great work, and don't let the hard-liners convince you that they speak for the majority, or that they are the true "base." It is plain that they most definitely are NOT President Bush's base supporters, since they take every opportunity to call the president names, question every move he's ever made since taking office, question his patriotism, etc. -- all under the cover of immigration. It's horse hockey. They are just the chronic complainers and absolutists who've found a convenient group of people to demonize, and a new reason to threaten a walk out. Believe me, there is NOTHING that will make that bunch happy about ANYTHING.
You've got a difficult couple of months ahead, sir. Stay strong, and Gods speed.
