The National Spelling Bee began its first rounds today. All of the action can be followed at: www.spellingbee.com.
Also, the championship rounds will be broadcast live on ABC (for the first time) beginning at 8PM EST Thursday evening.
I'm placing my guess on Speller #238, Samir Patel, from Fort Worth, Texas. He will be worth the price of admission for you to watch tomorrow evening. He was HILARIOUS last year when we participated in the Bee!
TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: bee; chatroomstuff; homeschool; homeschoolers; homeschooling; icantspel; jonathanhorton; kat; national; samirpatel; skool; spelling; spellingbee

What was so funny about him?
When he got to the championship rounds he would receive his word to spell from the pronouncer and it would always be some esoteric word that nobody had ever heard.
Samir would always shout "YES!!" and then say: "Is the the word that means....." and then proceed to rattle off the dictionary definition of the word. He was a little human computer and always had a smile on his face. A great kid!!

Our first contestant is from New York, Ms. Hitlery Clinton. Ms. Clinton, your word is "Treason".
"Use of the word please?"
Of course. "The Clintons committed treason against the United States of America."
Duh,...I give up!

LOL!!! Now that was funny! I wonder if she would know how to spell it instead of just doing it?

My impression is that home-schooled kids win this bee at a rate disproportionate to their small numbers. Go home-schoolers!

If you say it loud enough, you'll always sound precocious.

On the Last Comic Standing last night there was a chick with a lisp who said supercallifragilisticexpealidocious....hilarious!

Check out some of the words these kids are spelling during live Round 3 action:
Round 3.
Maithreyi Gopalakrishnan was the first to drop out during the third round. She is sponsored by the Boulder Daily Camera here in my state of Colorado. This is a big surprise since it is her third time participating at the National Bee and she studies year round with special internet spelling groups.
Hopefully she will now relax and enjoy the rest of her stay in Washington, D.C. Last year, her parent had her stay in her hotel room studying the whole time.
My son represented Colorado last year and was sponsored by the Rocky Mountain News. We took full advantage of all of the sightseeing trips that were offered and had a GREAT time!

I bet some buffoon would sign up today to make dumb comments he thought were clever.

So did they ban the home-schooled kids this year? That had been proposed, I suppose because they had an unfair advantage.
