Woman escorted from her church
Richmond Times Dispatch ^ | 5/31/2006 | ALBERTA LINDSEY

Police called after she was told not to come; she wants documents

A Hopewell woman, a vocal critic of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, was escorted by police from her parish church over the weekend after she refused to leave.

Lynn Allgeier, 58, who has attended St. James Catholic Church in Hopewell for eight years, has tried to get the diocese and her parish to make their financial records available for inspection by the laity. She also wants to read the personnel file of Saint James' pastor, the Rev. Frank L. Wiggins Jr.

"They wouldn't give me a line-by-line budget showing how money is spent. I want that, and I want to know the history of the priest," Allgeier said.

William Etherington, an attorney for the diocese, said Allgeier has been disruptive.

"She accuses people of things that are not true and demands she be able to interview the pastor. The pastor has said, 'I don't want you here.' And he has the right to say that."

I'll look this post up in a few days and answer more. I find a very compelling reason for Christianity, but it doesn't refer to or depend on the most frequently offered ideas and beliefs.

I think it is the right of church members and others as well to see the "books"......

not only that, we Catholic laity had better be prepared to take over a larger share of running a parish, because we don't have enough priests to go around....and, its better for us to be more participatory, anyway....

I've got a funny feeling that the Pope isn't living in a cardboard box in the rain.

There is a sad loss today of the immediacy between belief and baptism illustrated in the bible. New believers tended to take the plunge pronto, they even insisted on it.

Amen.

I think the problem may be lack of emphasis on it.

I liked the 60's California style church baptisms at the beach. They got the idea down. "Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?"

Which translation of the Bible did you pull that quote from? BTW, that verse applies to people whose wealth is a hinderance in accepting God into their lives - because their wealth is their God. This ruler's heart was more interested in following the law than in meriting God's grace.

You imply that this verse applies to all - could you show me how you arrived at that conclusion?

"She is considering attending a church that is not Catholic, she said.
That's a good way to burn in hell forever."

Why would you want to be on a thread, for that matter a website, where probably 80% plus of the people on it are, under your definition, going to burn in hell forever. Seems like you wouldn't want to associate with the rest of your fellow Freepers who aren't Catholics and/or don't hold your beliefs. You want to be pals with those that are condemned to hell(unless, of course, they start believing as you do)?

Exactly. And churches which preach politics from the pew should loose that tax free status and be taxed as a PAC.

I'm sure every pastor/priest is different. MY opinion is that they should all be modest in their dress, their cars, their homes, etc. Nobody NEEDS to flaunt their wealth when they're supposed to be serving God. I think it's fine to HAVE wealth and good paychecks because they're worth it if they serve God but they don't have to be extravagent. It always looks bad. Humility always looks good on any servant of God.

Catholics believe that those who LEAVE the church are lost, not those who never were part of the church.

Look at how our Protestant brothers and sisters reacted to that post. It was a joke.
I can see where you would be offended but the same Protestant posters who were defending their beliefs, took this statement by MarkOMalley very lightly.

God Love those who sometimes see the humor in intentionally ridiculous posts! Sometime humor lightens up the situation.

I wasn't offended at all, notice the LOL!

If a Protestant had called said the same thing about Catholics, then you would have heard howling and cries of bigotry.

Well, golly gee whiz, I'm a Catholic and if someone I knew was kidding said it, I would put a LOL.

But then again, I guess you know better than I do.

No, lets assume you are right and it was meant to be funny.

I just hope a Catholic would take it in as good as humor.

How do you know when you are entering a Polish Village? You see the toilet paper hanging out to dry. Now I'll post a picture of a couple of darling Poles....
