Diana Irey to Appear Live on Free Republic, 14 June, 8:00 pm EDT
Irey for Congress ^ | 5/31/06 | Coop

http://www.irey.com/about/

Washington County Commissioner Diana Irey is vying to become the next Congreswoman from Pennsylvania's 12th District. Ms. Irey's reasons for challenging her opponent in this race:

"For decades, western Pennsylvania looked to John Murtha to stand up for our values. But as the years have drifted by, John Murtha has drifted further and further from the ideals that made this country great. He has become part of the problem in Washington. I don't believe we are receiving the representation in Congress we deserve and the time for change is now."

Diana Irey has a proven track record during her tenure as a Washington County Commissioner. She has successfully delivered seven consecutive balanced budgets without one tax increase. She has also worked tirelessly to enhance economic development in the region by working to create thousands of jobs for area residents.

Commissioner Irey considers her greatest accomplishment, along with her husband's, the raising of three children ages 16,15, and 12. "They are the reason I'm running. I can't sit quietly by while the special interests in Washington, D.C. continue to spend away our children's future."

Diana Irey has spent the last decade in public service as a Washington County Commissioner, and she is now running to bring her vision of government responsibility, lower taxes, and family values to the United States Congress as the Representative of the 12th District.

Please join Jim Robinson & Free Republic in hosting Ms. Irey on Flag Day to discuss her campaign against John Murtha, the economy, our national security, and other issues of your choosing. Questions may be pre-submitted to Free Republic, and Ms. Irey is willing to answer live questions during the thread. Look for more details as June 14th approaches.

Re: donations - this is a federal race and so Pennsylvania has no jurisdiction over fundraising. Federal election law limits individual contributions to $2000 per election (i.e. primary and general.) Any contribution over $250 must be itemized by the candidate on their FEC reports with the name and occupation of the donor listed. State of residence does not matter. So anyone can contribute up to $2000 to Ms. Irey's campaign, so long as they don't mind being named on her FEC report.

You might want to check with an election law expert to make sure that having Ms. Irey on a live thread here will not constitute a "campaign contribution" by FreeRepublic, which might have to be reported as an "in-kind" contribution to her campaign. We do not want to give Mr. Murtha any ammunition to throw at Ms. Irey. I'm assuming that because many forums such as Hugh Hewitt and Daily Kos are actively promoting certain candidates and urging members to contribute to their campaigns, there is no legal restriction on such promotions.

Does she have a chance on winning or is murtha so entrenched in the political machine that he can't be blasted from his position...like the swimmer?

John Kerry won a whopping 51% of Murtha's district. Yes, she can win. She trails Murtha badly in fundraising, but Murtha's verbal vomit has helped her financially and with name recognition considerably over the past couple of weeks.

But don't believe me. Ask her yourself.

This is going to be excellent, Coop. You're a great American.

Thanks, but I just posted the thread. Jim Robinson was gracious enough to host this event, and Ms. Irey and her staff were kind enough to agree to her appearance.

Good suggestion. Hopefully her campaign considered that (I know I didn't), but we'll ask them to check it out.

I'll go back over the thread to see if there is a place to send a small donation to her campaign. I'm in Louisiana but murtha needs to get the hell out.

If you have a ping list, please add me to it. I would love to be a part of it. It will be very interesting.

Not only would entering the halls of Congress be an honor for her, but dumping a traitorous windbag in the process.

You're now on the list, thank you. And here's a link where you may contribute to her campaign. Cheers.

I've never had an anonymous donation sent back (hehehe) or handed back to me.

Usually under $50, there isn't any problem. Just invest in some stamps and money orders.

I don't see the difference between Diana Irey "appearing" here vs. her appearing on Laura Ingram or any other news outlet.

All the encouragements for contributions have come from individuals such as myself, and not from the owner of the site.

Just wondering, when a newspaper endorses a candidate is that considered a campaign contribution?

I really don't see the difference either, but it seems like a good idea to open it up for discussion/consideration.

Just invest in some stamps and money orders.

That is generally how I do things. It can possibly present a problem if you claim deductions on your taxes...but that is okay.

It used to not be...but after all the campaign finance "reforms" that could have changed. All I know is that the rules are complex and you have to check every minute detail many times over and even then you may be wrong...and good intentions don't count for much.

An endorsement of a politician by a newspaper is a good idea to not read that paper any longer though.

Done, Coop.

Might I also suggest, in the spirit of some of our other threads, that her picture always appear in a thread regarding her? (i.e. "the 'rules'") A, some still might not know her by sight, and B (despite her being married...so is Malkin), she is VERY easy on the eyes.
