Johnny Carson had Bette Midler singing to him during his farewell week on NBC's Tonight show in 1992, but tomorrow, Katie Couric will have Tony Bennett and the entire cast of a Broadway show.
"We're going to throw her a nice party on May 31st, and the viewers are invited - they should all participate," Jim Bell, executive producer of Today, said in a telephone interview last week.
As she leaves to anchor the CBS Evening News, her 15 years of co-hosting Today will be remembered mostly in videos. "From her colonoscopy to some contentious political interviews and some silly singing moments, it's going to be a great sendoff - and the viewers will be a special part of it through the videos they've sent in to her saying goodbye."
NBC solicited viewer videos with an online message that said: "If you'd like to say goodbye ... wish her well ... thank her ... tell her what you're going to miss the most ... share how she inspired you ... or just want to say what you love most about her ... here's your chance."
While the language - "just say what you love most about her" - might suggest overkill to some, that's not so, said Abe Novick, a senior vice president who specializes in popular culture at Eisner Communications, one of the largest independent buyers of TV time on the East Coast.
"In the era of uploading and myspace.com, there is something very smart about offering the viewers a way to insert themselves into Katie Couric's goodbye via the videos," Novick said. "It's a way to let the viewers feel as if they have a more active role in expressing their affection as they say goodbye to someone they feel warmly about."

Public Awareness done with a twist of humor. Gonna miss ol' Katie.
We owe her for those she may have encouraged to get checked out, it's a piece of cake these days..
lmao.. perky katie couric.. lmao
Yes, but she is not retiring she is going to cbs.Isn't that the same netwrok Mary Mapes came from and of course Dan Rahter. HUM, me thinks ol katie just going to show more of her ugly duckling colors. To do this she is in the right place, out of the fry pan into the fire.
I know who she is, but I've never known what network she was on. I still don't.
"More Americans now get their news from Katie's butt than from any other source."
Good Riddance, Beyotch!
I don't know what nauseates me more about her:
Her excessive Phyllis Diller style eye make up
or, her "gummy" smile.
I thought she had been on CBS for the last 6 months. Katie who???????
I remember some Katie, a showbiz-type that was a perky news reader at one of the old networks back in the 2oth century. I wonder if it is the same woman.
Oh yea, I must put that on my list of things to do. Let me see,.......oh my, the litter box needs changing, there's those piles of dog dodo in the yard from the neighbor's two mastiffs, poopy diapers......Nope sorry, there won't be room on the list to "send off" the liberal queen. This story should have carried a BARF ALERT.
What is with her hoarse voice? I don't watch the Today Show very much, but occasionally switch over for the last hour.
I saw Katie maybe two weeks ago (it was the Monday after she had given the OSU graduation speech in Stillwater, whenever that was), then last week and a couple of days ago - and she has had laryngitis every single time - I assume it is now continuous?
It sounds *awful* and I can't believe someone who makes her living with her voice hasn't gotten it checked out or fixed.
I bet that's not photoshopped either!
It's not. :)
It was the morning after a salmon dinner, brocolli, and wine. I was nauseated all night. I got up and turned on the idiot box... Kewpie popped up and asked: "What up, girls?", and I spewed a vomitous specimen that makes gastro-endocrinologists go "ewwwwwwww".
They will have all those glowing tributes to Katie and I hope we wil be able to hear the stage crew singing "Thank God and Greyhound She's Gone" in the background.
That's right. Katie was on Today.
Dan Ackroyd did a great impression of Snyder on SNL. He was HILARIOUS.
Bad career move
