Johnny Carson had Bette Midler singing to him during his farewell week on NBC's Tonight show in 1992, but tomorrow, Katie Couric will have Tony Bennett and the entire cast of a Broadway show.
"We're going to throw her a nice party on May 31st, and the viewers are invited - they should all participate," Jim Bell, executive producer of Today, said in a telephone interview last week.
As she leaves to anchor the CBS Evening News, her 15 years of co-hosting Today will be remembered mostly in videos. "From her colonoscopy to some contentious political interviews and some silly singing moments, it's going to be a great sendoff - and the viewers will be a special part of it through the videos they've sent in to her saying goodbye."
NBC solicited viewer videos with an online message that said: "If you'd like to say goodbye ... wish her well ... thank her ... tell her what you're going to miss the most ... share how she inspired you ... or just want to say what you love most about her ... here's your chance."
While the language - "just say what you love most about her" - might suggest overkill to some, that's not so, said Abe Novick, a senior vice president who specializes in popular culture at Eisner Communications, one of the largest independent buyers of TV time on the East Coast.
"In the era of uploading and myspace.com, there is something very smart about offering the viewers a way to insert themselves into Katie Couric's goodbye via the videos," Novick said. "It's a way to let the viewers feel as if they have a more active role in expressing their affection as they say goodbye to someone they feel warmly about."

Wish her well.
Katie will go the way of Kathy Lee Gifford. In a year or so she'll disappear into obscurity, never to be heard from again.
Sorry Katie, I signed off the MSM over a decade ago.
"From her colonoscopy ............."
I think she was experiencing headaches, so they did a colonscopy. They found her brain had migrated - and shrunk from too much liberal thinking.
Fondly, I recall,
Underestimating you.
Couric, Oh!
Katie!
Your light!
Over us, yet
Undimmed. Goodbye!
Just wondering...
Elmo will miss her, too.
The highlight of her career... imo
Hopefully she will continue getting them. They might save her life someday. Actually everyone should get them. I have heard from so many people who found out too late and ended up dead.
Hip Hip Hoorah!
I'm counting the days.
I would like to send katie my own message AMF katie you stupid runt.
And who WON'T miss that shining smile, full of joy, joy, as she pulls the daily daggers out for her Republican guests? Katie Coco Couric: The Chimp Who Could Read Teleprompters.
