PHOTOGRAPHS taken by US military intelligence have provided crucial evidence that up to 24 Iraqis were massacred by marines in the insurgent stronghold of Haditha.
One photograph shows an Iraqi mother and young child, kneeling on the floor as if in prayer. They have both been shot dead at close range.
The pictures also show other Iraqi victims, shot execution-style in the head and chest in their ownhomes.
A US government official said the marines involved had "suffered a total breakdown in morality and leadership".
The killings are emerging as the worst known US atrocity of the Iraq war.
At least seven women and three children were among those killed in the massacre.
Witness accounts obtained by The Sunday Times suggest the number of children killed may be as high as six.
"This one is ugly," a US military official said.
In Britain, the chief of the defence staff, Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup, said at the weekend the "appalling" reports of the massacre could undermine British support for the war.
"This sort of accusation does make that harder to achieve," Air Chief Marshal said.
The pictures of the dead, which are being closely guarded by the US military criminal investigation service, were taken by a military photographer who is believed to have arrived on the scene moments after the shootings.
Many US forces are accompanied by photographers to gather intelligence and to shield soldiers from accusations of torture, intimidation and violence.
But the evidence in this case points to a murder rampage by the US marines.
The stain on the US military could prove harder to erase than the photographs of sadistic abuse and torture by US guards at the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad.
Comparisons are being made to the My Lai massacre in Vietnam in 1968, in which US troops slaughtered 500 villagers.
Up to a dozen marines may face criminal charges -- including murder, which carries the death penalty -- dereliction of duty and filing false reports.
Three marine commanders were suspended last month.
With a political storm brewing, the top US marine, General Michael Hagee, flew to Baghdad on Friday to tell his troops they must kill "only when justified".
The naval inquiry is focusing on the actions of a sergeant who may have been the leader of a four-man fire team.
Miguel Terrazas, 20, a lance-corporal from El Paso, Texas, was travelling in a convoy of four Humvees in Haditha just after 7am on November 19 last year when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle, killing him and wounding two others.
The events that followed are the subject of two military inquiries due to report soon: one into the facts of the case, the other into a cover-up.
One witness, Aws Fahmi, heard his neighbour, Yunis Salim Khafif, plead for his life in English, shouting: "I am a friend, I am good."
"But they killed him, his wife and daughters," Fahmi said.
Haditha, about 225km northwest of Baghdad, has long been considered a rebel stronghold. It is among a string of Euphrates Valley towns used by insurgents and foreign fighters to infiltrate from Syria to reach Baghdad and the Sunni heartland.

My original post responded to a complaint about the AP and the ACLU as a first reaction to reading the story about the alleged incident at Haditha. My comment was not a statement about the veracity of the AP nor the motives of ACLU. It was intended (but obviously not recieved) as a comment about someone using a story about an alleged tragedy as a platform to complain about the ACLU. And at this point, it is rather uninteresting to keep rehashing a third party's first response to a post. So I'll stop.
Frankly you didn't point out what constitutional rights were being whittled away.

Your scenario is PLAUSIBLE but unproven. The Marines who were on the scene are, indeed, innocent until such time as they may be proven guilty by a court-martial. However, much as I do NOT want to think that ANY of my Marines could do such a thing, I cannot make a judgement either way. I know that in the heat of battle or the aftermath of a bombing such as ocurred in this case, it would not be out of the question that troops COULD lose it, especially when they are doing, day after day, work they are NOT trained for, work that is NOT a legitimate function of military people. So I acknowledge the POSSIBLITY while hoping that when the facts are unearthed, it will in fact be something along the lines of what you suggested.
The point is you didn't consider it prudent to "(use) a story about an alleged tragedy as a platform" while disregarding the clear history of the AP (particuarly since 2000) and the ACLU since it's inception but more distinctly since the mid-sixties. Essentially you "used a story about an alleged tragedy as a platform" as a platform to allege a tragedy of thought. Your initial reaction to that poster's digs at AP/ACLU is similar to liberals who felt United 93 was "too soon."

Most threads are that way, some are not. Your posts to other stories clearly show that you are arguing for arguments sake - nitpicking (such as in this case) while put off when someone nitpicks about your nitpicking.

If you'd like to discuss one of those issues in which I was "nitpicking" about silly things like the Constitution, feel free. I'm still trying to figure out how the photos are evidence that the marines did ANYTHING! As nearly as I can tell they show dead people - not who caused them to be that way.
Those marines MAY have done this (though it doesn't smell right) but the photos themselves aren't proof of it. Insurgents could have killed these people.

However, photos aren't the same as video. The "caught on film" is technically correct, but gives a false impression.

That being said the guy that did the video tape (and a variety of cohorts) have been shown to be "compromised sources. The main guy is a "budding journalist" and vice-chair of a two-man human rights group.

No problem, just no way that some photographer is going to snap something like that from our troops.
#1 Doesn't sound like anything we'd do. They are good people.
#2 Anyone doing such things wouldn't allow that kind of thing filmed.
So, in no way did it sound Kosher to me.
