Democrats' worst nightmare
Town Hall ^ | May 29, 2006 | Robert Novak

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- Richmond Myrick, the principal of Largo High School, is a registered Democrat in overwhelmingly Democratic Prince George's County next to Washington, D.C. He has not been active politically and is not recorded as having made any contributions to candidates for federal office. Recently, he stood in the parking lot of Prince George's Community College adjoining his school to introduce Republican Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, whom he has endorsed for the U.S. Senate.

Myrick is African American, as are most students at Largo High. So is Steele. If enough non-political blacks follow Myrick's course, Steele will become the first black Republican elected to the Senate in 32 years. That is the Democrats' worst nightmare. Democratic dominance in Maryland has been based on maintaining hammerlock over the state's substantial African-American vote. Steele threatens that domination.

Steele sees national implications and put it to me this way in a conversation before the recent rally in Upper Marlboro: "It's a breaking point. I've heard the talk: 'Hillary, Bill, Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, all are coming in to campaign against you. They can't bear to see you win this race.' If I win this race, I am sure that the whole dynamic changes."

This is a potential bright spot in a dreary 2006 election vista for the Republican Party. In addition, two other African-American Republicans are running for governor -- Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio and former professional football star Lynn Swann in Pennsylvania. A victory by any one of them would constitute a rare GOP breakthrough in the black vote, but a Steele win in Maryland would be most exceptional.

Maryland typifies the pattern of blacks supplying nearly unanimous support for Democrats but getting little to show for it in the way of major offices.

"MD Dems have been dissing Blacks for years..."

you could have left out the 'MD' .. it's a nation-wide phenomenon ... remember when Ford wanted to run for leadership in that House? ha!

they are romancing Obama now, but we'll see how long that lasts.

D's just use blacks and I DO hope they wake up soon.

I'd like Steele under any circumstances; he's a fine man.

After he became Lt Governor, or when he was running for it, people tossed oreos at him at a fundraiser.

Why does the image that just formed in my mind have white people throwing the oreos? A bunch of people named Goldberg and O'Shaughnessy telling him he's not black enough?

Yes, all that is true. But, heck, I'm white. I can't convince Blacks that they are being treated badly. They have to figure it out for themselves.

I like Steele. I don't care what color he is. But if he makes the Black community rethink their devotion to the Dems, that's a plus.

Obama is an empty suit, IMO. The Dems will use him, but put a cap on his political aspirations.

'Image' is to 'charge' as 'substance' is to 'evidence'.

Huh?

There are two things I like about Keeton-McClellan-Rylander-Strayhorn.

1. The Comptroller's Office is, by my measure, the only state agency/department that has been of any help to my business this year. They answer the phones, and they do what they say they are going to do.

2. Every document that is released from her office can be taken "to the bank." I have never seen anything released that wasn't solidly based on fact.

It is kind of sad though. A look at the Texas ballot this November.

1. A former Democrat running as a Republican.
2. A former Democrat running as an Independents
3. A Democrat.
4. An Independent that has never been in public service that probably votes for Democrats.

GO KINKY!!!

We saw Kinky with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue in MS in 1976. Dang! That was 30 years ago! He sang, "I'm Proud to be an A$$hole from El Paso", and one of his back-up singers was Joan Baez in a mini-dress and orange afro wig. It was a HOOT!

Michael Steele is a great American and he has me vote, and my support

Ditto! And we could use him in the Senate.

Great points.

Bottom line: If 15% of black voters admit ahead of time that they are going to vote for Steele, at least 25% of black voters will end up doing so.

It may be much higher than 25% this fall. IMO more and more black voters are detecting the foul stench of betrayal in the air. They are also realizing that liberal politica have only set them back and that they are more conservative than they thought.

Blacks are also coming to the realization that they are a whole lot more conservative than the athiests, condom-throwers, abortion enthusiasts, Hollywood drunks, gold-chained union thugs, Boy Scout-hating lesbians, race-hustling extortionists, screeching feminists, America-hating professors, and the rest of the parasites, losers, goofballs, and malcontents who comprise the "base" of the Democrat party.

It's an excruciatingly slow process sometimes, but people do eventually get a grip.

How? Kerry still got about the same amount of the "black vote" as Gore/Clinton/......

Wishing for it to happen is not going to make it happen. Steele will probably lose this race, but we need to keep putting high profile candidates up there. Why did JC Watts leave Congress?

Are normally non-political African-Americans are planning on voting for Michael Steele but keeping their intentions to themselves?

Blacks aren't outspoken when they go against the Democrat grain.

Indeed. I think that they also started scratching their heads as to why they jump everytime liberal black leaders rush off to defend the indefensible. Of course high profile people like Bill Cosby stating some basic yet undeniable facts and truths have also helped.

Either way, the black political base is becoming just as divided as the rest of the political spectrum, and that's good in this case considering that the net change is towards the conservative.

The post (#35) I replied to was this:Myrick is African American
Image is still more important to some than is substance. DemocRATS know that and play that tune every chance they get. I would rather the sentence read - Myrick is a proud American.

Image is more important than substance to a lefty lib. Any charge made by a lefty against a conservative is always more important than the evidence to prove it true because, as a general rule, lefties run on emotion as opposed to fact. So I wrote "'Image' is to 'charge' as 'substance' is to 'evidence'. All of this means, to me anyway, that it is more important for the dimbo establishment to characterize Steele as a turncoat black (charge) that doesn't fit with caring for his 'people' irregardless of his positions on issues (evidence), i.e., the appearance (image) of the package is far more important than what's inside (substance) in order to advance the dimbo agenda. This is why libs tend to ignore/reject facts.

But of course, we won't hear anything about it before the election day. Blacks who speak out in support of Steele will be labeled as traitors to their race.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

A few weeks back my wife told me to be sure to catch "Dr. Phil", when I asked why she said that someone we knew was going to be on as a guest. Well, I watched and the guest was a black man I know from the church we both attended at one time. He was on the show to air the fact that his friends say that the "acts too white". He speaks very clearly and distinctly, in fact I wish I were as well-spoken. He likes country music and he has the nerve to vote Republican! This man has sat on my couch in the past and discussed politics, his first words to me on the subject were,"I cannot understand why all the black people I know vote for the Democrats, I keep telling them that they are just using us, they don't wan't us to get ahead, they want us to keep depending on them for a handout so that we will vote for them".
