UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- Richmond Myrick, the principal of Largo High School, is a registered Democrat in overwhelmingly Democratic Prince George's County next to Washington, D.C. He has not been active politically and is not recorded as having made any contributions to candidates for federal office. Recently, he stood in the parking lot of Prince George's Community College adjoining his school to introduce Republican Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, whom he has endorsed for the U.S. Senate.
Myrick is African American, as are most students at Largo High. So is Steele. If enough non-political blacks follow Myrick's course, Steele will become the first black Republican elected to the Senate in 32 years. That is the Democrats' worst nightmare. Democratic dominance in Maryland has been based on maintaining hammerlock over the state's substantial African-American vote. Steele threatens that domination.
Steele sees national implications and put it to me this way in a conversation before the recent rally in Upper Marlboro: "It's a breaking point. I've heard the talk: 'Hillary, Bill, Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, all are coming in to campaign against you. They can't bear to see you win this race.' If I win this race, I am sure that the whole dynamic changes."
This is a potential bright spot in a dreary 2006 election vista for the Republican Party. In addition, two other African-American Republicans are running for governor -- Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio and former professional football star Lynn Swann in Pennsylvania. A victory by any one of them would constitute a rare GOP breakthrough in the black vote, but a Steele win in Maryland would be most exceptional.
Maryland typifies the pattern of blacks supplying nearly unanimous support for Democrats but getting little to show for it in the way of major offices.

I did see a blurb somewhere that said that Rendell had about 3 times more money...and Lynn was concerned that Rendell had "convinced" businesses NOT to back Lynn...if ya know what I mean...

It's so early in the year, I'm not ready to say Swann has no chance to beat Fast-Eddie.

I believe that many blacks will keep their mouths shut and then do their talking from the quiet sanctity of the voting booth. It happens all the time: People are embarrassed to admit even to pollsters that they support somebody whom their peers (or the politically correct liberal press) has deemed unacceptable, but when the time comes to cast their votes, they vote their hearts and minds.
Then the next day, the wide-eyed press and punditry try to spin how they could have been so brutally wrong. Bottom line: If 15% of black voters admit ahead of time that they are going to vote for Steele, at least 25% of black voters will end up doing so.
LOL...I keep forgetting it is only the end of May...
I get caught up in the cable news, and to hear them talk the 2008 POTUS election is right around the corner!!
Yeah...I need to have patience...but, I have been making a list of candidates in different states that I would like to send a contribution to..

You'd better beleive that this is a regional thing, as families have relatives in adjoining states. Blackwell and Steele have already won statewide and may give Swann coattails.

I live in Texas and I'd vote for anyone other than Perry. As a matter of fact, I'm voting for Kinky Friedman. I can't stand Perry or the "one tough (opportunistic) grandma" Strayhorn and I'd never vote for a Democrat. So........

Ordinary blacks realize that they don't speak for them, are part of the wealthy liberal establishment bloc that makes up the Democratic Party (just as NOW doesn't represent women and Earth First! doesn't represent most environmentalists) and only beg for their votes when election time rolls around. Mainstream blacks have had enough, IMO, and although they won't vote Republican they'll look for free-market and conservative solutions to problems instead of blindly supporting black "leaders" who don't speak for them.
I don't remember the details but something Kathleen Kennedy Townsend did upset black leaders in your fair state, giving Ehrlich (and Steele) an opening to the State House. I've read recently the black leaders don't like the way Kwasi Mfumi has been dissed, so a similar situation could repeat for Steele in '06. All they have to do is depress the typical black Democrat vote and get out the enthused blacks who are willing to vote for a Republican, especially if he's black.
The strategic impact on the dynamics of Republican/Democrat political allignment is less important to me than the impact on the prospects of the minority communities in our nation. The Democrats have spent 200 years oppressing and exploiting minorities in this country, always telling them that they had their "best interests" at heart. I pray that we can smash that horrible lie forever.
And if it pisses off "Republicans" like Trent Lott, all the better.
MD Dems have been dissing Blacks for years. The Black voters just might catch on this year, and it would be curtains for the Dem party machine.
Examples - KKT picked a white former GOPer as her running mate; Ehrlich picked a Black GOPer.
Ike Leggett has been doing his duty in the Dem party for years, and he gets no support from the Dems. (I think he should have been screaming for years, but he's been obedient).
Mfume has been everything but buried by the Dems. He wants to be Senator; the Dems want (white) Cardin. The GOP wants Black Steele.
The Dem gubernatorial candidates both picked Black running mates this year; if anyone thinks they did it other than to "one-up" Ehrlich, please contact me for the price of a bridge I'd like to sell you.
If Blacks want political power in MD, this is their year to get it. Otherwise, they can just keep the legislative districts they have been permitted to have by the MD Dem party machine.
It's going to be fun to watch.
'Image' is to 'charge' as 'substance' is to 'evidence'. They are always more interested in the emotional appeal of their allegations than they are the evidence to back them up. What a disgusting way to live!!!
