The Afghans have a terrible reputation for skinning people alive. The British soldiers retained a round to commit suicide in preference to be captured and skinned by Afghans if the situation presented itself. A rifle round through the head is better than being skinned alive and bludgeoned to a pulp.

I'm beginning to suspect you are right: Bush has tried to wage a moderate war by seeking out political allies amongst the Afghans and Iraqis.

We have some, and some important ones.

But the biggest intelligence failure of all was being fooled by the fact that because our intelligence agencies, diplomats and military were dealing with moderate semi-sane Muslims that these people had enough political weight to carry their countries forward.

This was 'Plan A' and I am afraid we will head towards 'Plan B', a war of annihilation like WWII if this effort fails. But 'Plan B' will come into effect either because we will stiffen our spine now and do what is necessary; or, we will dither and suffer another, even more devastating terrorist attack, which will be followed by a massive slaughter of towel heads.

In either case, there will be no peace until these scum are bludgeoned into submission.

If we had not made the wise decision to leave the Emperor of Japan in place as a figurehead, who then urged the people of Japan to acquiesce in the Occupation of that nation, similar events would obviously have happened in Japan. Similar events DID happen in Germany after the surrender.
