Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner urged Rep. Jack Murtha on Sunday to stop prejudging allegations that U.S. Marines massacred 24 Iraqi civilians after their convoy was attacked by a IED last November.
Asked about Murtha's claim that Marines executed residents of the village of Haditha "in cold blood," Sen. Warner told ABC's "This Week":
"At this time, particularly on Memorial Day . . . I think we should be calm and reassuring to the American people that the men and women of our armed forces are admirably and professionally conducting their heavy responsibilities."
The top Republican said: "I respect my friend, John Murtha. I also was privileged to wear the Marine uniform. But we've got to let the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the investigation system, proceed before we reach any conclusions on this matter."
Earlier in the broadcast, Murtha said there was "no doubt" that the accused Marines were guilty, adding that he suspected that a cover-up of their war crimes goes "up the chain of command."
"This is very serious," Warner acknowledged. "But the military is looking at it equally seriously."
In contrast to Murtha's pronouncements of certain guilt, the former Navy Secretary said questions remain about "what happened and when it happened and what was the reaction of senior officers in the Marine Corps."
Warner pledged to hold hearings on the Haditha incident, but not until the Uniform Code of Military Justice had "run its course."
It gets Dems a win in the next election. Geeze.
I'm guessing that the Dems want the International War Crimes Tribunal to handle this case.
"I have lived in VA since 1984!!! I can count on my right hand how many times he has run opposed. Never any primaries for us to get rid of him."
I've lived in Virginia since 1984 too. I've voted for Warner in every election since then, and I believe he has been unopposed. I'll vote for Allen in '06 since he opposes amnesty, but Warner has voted with the DemocRATS on every amendment in the Senate re: S. 2611. I've faxed and e-mailed him numerous times asking him to change his vote and support HR 4437. He responded once!
In his letter of April 21. 2006 he stated "I have been supportive of efforts to curtail illegal immigration and enhance border security and have voted consistently to increase resources and personnel for border patrol in an effort to ensure the domestic security for our nation. In addition to ensuring border security and immigration enforcement, however, I believe we must seek a realistic approach that addresses the problems associated with our current guest-worker programs and the estimated 12 million undocumented individuals present in the United States."
It's the "howevers" that getchya!!!!! He may not run for the Senate again, at least I hope he won't. I'd like to encourage Virgil Goode to run for his seat. He's standing solid with us in the House. Warner may have a chance for one more vote if the House reaches a compromise with the Senate bill. I hope he does the right thing. I've lost all faith in him.
Does Irey, a republican running have any chance at all in this District?
Don't forget Rummy, they are forever after Rummy.
Don't forget Murtha was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Abscam scandal 25 years ago. He's been dirty for a long time.
Murtha's words will not get the Dems a win in the next election. The majority of Americans do not appreciate anyone who bets against the home team. The majority of Americans will not vote for anyone who bets against the home team. The more of this type attack we hear against our troops from the Dems the less their support will be in national elections.
Now there is some real motivation. That sounds more realistic. I knew there had to be something substantial in this for him personally.
Turda should give our soldiers the same presumption of innocence he had in the Abscam Scandal.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
